Manila continued its successful season on the links last week in high school golf action. The Lion golfers fired a team score of 109 in a four team event held Tuesday, Aug. 25, at the Victory Lake Golf Course in Corning.
Tracey Reinhart shot a one under par 35 to take home medalist honors, leading the Lions to the win. J.J. Helton was close behind, firing an even par 36, while Garrett Scott also had a good day, shooting a two over par 38. Blake Wheeler finished with a 41.
Rivercrest came in a distant second with a team score of 134, led by Nick Wilson who shot a five over par 41. Marmaduke finished third with a team total of 159, led by Andy Brannon's 51. Host Corning did not qualify for the team competition, but Trevor Keck fired a four over par 40 for the Bobcats.
Mikayla Shedd shot a 49 to lead the Lady Lions, while Taylor Bishop and Brigette Yancey shot 53 and 59 respectively.
The Lions began the week at the Sugar Creek Country Club in Piggott, in a five team match held Monday, Aug. 24. Manila finished six shots behind Brookland, who won the event with a team score of 119. Brent Davis of Brookland and Manila's Tracey Reinhart shared medalist honors, with both firing a three over par 39.
The Bearcats had a pair of players shoot four over par 40's in Justin Kidd and Tyler Stephens.
Garrett Scott shot a 42, finishing three shots back of Reinhart, while teammate J.J. Helton was another two shots back with a score of 44. Blake Wheeler came home with a score of 46.
Host Piggott placed third with a team total of 137, led by Hayden McMillan's 42. Marmaduke shot a 163, led by Andy Brannon's 49. Corning brought up the rear with a team total of 180. Trevor Keck led the Bobcats with a 52.
In the girls division, Manila's Taylor Bishop led the Lady Lions, shooting a 57 while teammates Mikayla Shedd and Brigette Yancey both shot 61's. Piggott had just one participant, Kayla Morgan, who fired a 52.
The Lions completed the week in the Brookland Invitational Tournament held at Sage Meadows in Jonesboro on Thursday. The tournament host Bearcats won the event with a 16 stroke victory over the second place Lions. Justin Kidd shot a one over par 37 to lead Brookland to a team total of 116 while claiming medalist honors.
J.J. Helton led Manila with a 42, Garrett Scott shot a 43 while Tracey Reinhart's 47 gave the Lions a team total of 132.
Rivercrest placed third, shooting 156, led by Landon Welch's 46. Piggott finished fourth with a 158 team total. Tanner Murray led the Mohawks, shooting 48.
The Manila boys will return to action Monday afternoon with a match at the Thunder Bayou Golf Course in Gosnell. The boys district tournament will begin Wednesday, Sept. 9, at the Sugar Creek Country Club in Piggott.
The Lady Lions will begin district tournament play Thursday, also at Sugar Creek Country Club in Piggott.
"We have had a good year so far," said Manila Coach John Deaton. "We have four solid golfers who are all shooting 44 or better. The only tournaments we have failed to win are the ones that Brookland has played in. They are a very good team. But we are improving and I think we have a shot against them when tournament time comes around."
