Riverside defeats EPC 6-3, advances to Regional Tournament

Riverside jumped to a 4-0 lead and held on for a 6-3 victory over East Poinsett County Friday afternoon at Monette to qualify for the regional softball tournament to be held April 24th at Melbourne.

The Lady Rebels got on the board with a run in the first inning, thanks to a bunt single by senior Morgan Emery, who stole second base and eventually came home to score on a wild pitch.

Riverside picked up a pair of runs in the third inning to increase their lead to 3-0. Becca Frayer began the inning with a bunt single, stole second and third and came home on an RBI infield hit off the bat of Emery. Emery later scored on a wild pitch.

The Lady Rebels picked up a single run in the fourth when Katey Campbell laced an RBI triple to the left centerfield fence. Campbell came home to score when EPC pitcher Hailey Shankle uncorked a wild pitch, giving the Lady Rebels a 4-0 lead.

EPC picked up a run in the top of the fifth inning on an RBI groundout by Candice Ashley. Riverside got the run right back in their half of the fifth when senior third baseman Holly Dudley drilled an inside the park homerun to push the Rebel lead to 5-1.

The Lady Warriors struck for two runs in the top of the sixth. Carla Kemp started the inning with a single and came home to score on a base hit by Shankle. Kelli Saddler drove in EPC's third run with a base hit up the middle, scoring Shankle and cutting the Rebel lead to 5-3.

Riverside scored their final run in the sixth inning when Campbell singled, stole second and came home on another wild pitch from Shankle to set the final score at 6-3.

Emery and Katey Campbell led Riverside at the plate with two hits apiece while Frayer, Dudley, Michelle Cobb, Beth Anne Snyder and Kyley Campbell all added singles. Kaitlyn Staggs went the distance on the mound to pick up the victory, allowing four hits while striking out three and walking one.

Riverside will play Marked Tree Monday afternoon in a 5:30 semifinal game at Monette.

The Lady Rebels closed the regular season at Lake City Thursday afternoon sweeping a doubleheader from Marmaduke. Riverside won the first game 12-2 and took the nightcap 19-16.

Michelle Cobb went 2-3 and drove in three runs while Morgan Emery went 3-4 with two RBIs to lead Riverside in the opener. Becca Frayer had a pair of hits, scored three runs and stole a pair of bases, while Kyley Campbell went 2-2 with a stolen base. Holly Dudley, Katey Campbell, Katie Brown and Kaitlyn Staggs all picked up hits to round out the Rebel attack. Staggs picked up the win, allowing two runs while fanning nine batters.

In the nightcap, Riverside got a five RBI performance from Katey Campbell, who went 3-5 at the plate. Holly Dudley and Bobbye Lunsford both had a pair of hits and drove in three runs apiece. Becca Frayer went 2-3 and scored four runs while stealing three bases. Morgan Emery was a perfect 3-3 at the plate with four runs scored and three stolen bases. Kyley Campbell and Kaitlyn Staggs had a pair of hits each while Katie Brown finished with an RBI single. Michelle Cobb picked up the win on the mound.
