Anna Mae Watkins celebrates 99th birthday
Anna Mae Watkins was 99 years old on Feb. 12, 2009. Her daughter Sylvia E. McEwen with the help of granddaughter, Barbara Holmes, hosted a reception on Sunday, Feb. 15, at their home in Texarkana. Mrs. Watkins is a former Manila resident.
"The attendance was unbelievable," McEwen said. "Friends and family came from as far away as Huntsville and Nashville, Tenn."
Mrs. Watkins is still active in the Order of Eastern Star. She is still making fried pies and selling them for scholarships for those going into full time ministry. Three young men have received $2,000 scholarships. She was Grand Electa in the Grand Chapter of Arkansas O.E.S. in 2006. She was honored to have the Worthy Grand Matron, Carol Ann Roberson, and Worthy Grand Patron, Sherrell Baker, of the Grand chapter of Arkansas Order of Eastern Star, and a number of Past Grand Matrons and Past Grand Patrons, and other members of O.E.S. attend her birthday reception.
Members of her church, Beech Street First Baptist Church, and neighbors were well represented. Over 100 guests came by to wish her a happy birthday. Mrs. Watkins was thrilled and excited to have so many wishing her well.
Her family and friends all agree they are looking forward to celebrating her 100th birthday.
