Lions improve to 6-1 on the season

Manila drubbed Piggott 10-3 Monday afternoon before coming back with a 16-1 triumph over Marked Tree on Tuesday to improve to 6-0 on the season. The Lions suffered their first loss of the year with an 8-4 setback to Gosnell Thursday afternoon.

Manila scored five runs in the first inning of Monday's win over Piggott to remain unbeaten in conference play. Frankie Cowgill was 2-4 with a pair of doubles and three runs scored. The senior also stole three bases on the day. Michael Shedd continued his hot hitting on the season, going 2-4 with two runs scored and three RBIs. Hunter Bryan had a pair of hits, including a triple while scoring two times. Kyle Evans belted a homerun while going 2-4. Evans scored twice and drove in two runs. Luke McLaughlin also homered while going 2-3 with a pair of RBIs.

Tray Malone (4-0) went the distance, scattering 10 hits while striking out eight and walking two to pick up the victory.

Manila took a 5-0 lead after two innings over Marked Tree before exploding for an 11 run fourth inning in the Lion's 16-1 thumping of the Indians. Manila rapped out 14 hits on the day, including a pair of homeruns by Frankie Cowgill and Kyle Evans. Cowgill went 2-5 with four RBIs and three runs scored while Evans had a pair of hits, scored twice and drove in three runs. Hunter Bryan doubled, tripled, scored twice and drove in a pair of runs. Zach Birmingham had two hits, including a double, scored twice and drove in a run. Michael Shedd went 2-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored while Jacob Britt had two hits in three plate appearances and scored twice. Tray Malone and Jared Humphrey had one hit apiece.

Shedd picked up the win going four innings, allowing one run while striking out five and walking two.

Freshman Gavin Sullivan slugged a first inning grand slam and drove in five runs to lead Gosnell past Manila, sending the Lions to their first defeat of the season.

Frankie Cowgill pitched the first six innings and took the loss for Manila.

The Lions will return to action Monday when they travel to Monette to take on Buffalo Island Central. Manila will journey to Tuckerman for a Tuesday afternoon game before participating in the Xtra Innings Classic March 26-28 at Jonesboro.
