Buffalo Island Central picked up their first win of the season, holding off defending 2A-3 conference champion Marked Tree 3-2 Tuesday afternoon in softball action at Monette.
"This was a very big win for us," said Mustang coach Carey Cossey. "Marked Tree has a good bunch and has almost everyone back from last season. We are really excited about the victory."
Karla Marroquin struck out 13 while going the distance to pick up the victory for the Lady Mustangs. Marroquin's biggest strikeout of the day came in the top of the fifth with the potential tying run at third base. The Lady Mustangs went into the final inning with a 3-0 lead, but saw the Lady Indians score two runs before Marroquin ended the five-inning game with the strikeout.
BIC scored all their runs in the bottom of the third inning, with Megan Misner driving in what proved to be the game winning run with an RBI single. Marroquin drove in BIC's other two runs. The junior went 2-2 with a pair of RBIs and a run scored. Jenna Pike and Demi Hargrove both singled and scored runs while Shelby Qualls and Madison Finch each singled.
The win evened BIC's record at 1-1 on the season. Hannah Ghant took the loss for Marked Tree.
BIC will play four home games this week, beginning Monday against Armorel. The Lady Mustangs will host Cross County on Tuesday, East Poinsett County on Thursday and Rector on Friday. BIC will participate in the Nettleton Tournament beginning Saturday.
