Floyd Junior "Hoot" Broughton, 84, of Monette, formerly of Leachville, died Friday, Nov. 14, 2008, at St. Bernards Hospital in Jonesboro. He was born in Leachville, July 26, 1924, to Bennie Edgar and Lorean Abagail Ashbrand Broughton, he lived around Manila, Leachville, and the Whisp community most of his life.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Orville and Marvin; sister, Doris Louise Drennen; maternal grandparents, Alonzo Jesse Mack and Anna Mae Harvey Ashbrand, and uncles, Henry Christopher "Buster" Ashbrand and Jesse Thomas Carl "Jug" Ashbrand.

He is survived by his only child, Betty Sue Broughton Steele and her husband, John Edward Steele, of Monette; three grandsons, Christopher James Steele and wife, Michelle, of Boulder, Colo., Mark Lloyd Steele and wife, Stephanie, of Plano, Texas; Timothy John Steele of Smyrna, Ga.; and granddaughter, Elizabeth Delores Steele Mangrum and husband, Phillip, of Murfressboro, Tenn.; four great-grandsons, Brandon John, Cameron Mark, and Dylan Broughton Steele of Plano, Texas, and Max Floyd Steele of Boulder, Colo.; two great-granddaughters, Jessica Tracy and Natalie Mildred Steele of Boulder, Colo.

He was of the Baptist belief. He spent his lifetime working starting at the age of 11, loading logs with a team of mules. He farmed for a while and later drove trucks for Russ Crowell, Newsom Bros., and Mississippi County. He served the community as a dispatcher and patrolman for the Leachville Police Department. For a period he had the privilege of working for his good friends, Martha Jo and Earl Smith at Howard Funeral Service. He retired as custodian and bus driver from Buffalo Island Central Schools, which provided his favorite job, hauling the Lady Mustangs basketball team.

The funeral was held at 2 p.m. Saturday in Howard Funeral Service Chapel in Leachville with Rev. Rusty Bird officiating. Burial was in Leachville Cemetery.
