Lion golfers advance to Regionals
Senior Michael Shedd fired a one over par 73 to help lead the Manila Lions to a runner-up finish in the 3-AAA District Golf Championships Tuesday at the Sugar Creek Country Club in Piggott.
Shedd's score was good enough to earn runner-up medalist honors, finishing two strokes behind Chris Predmore of Rivercrest. Predmore took home the top spot with a one under 71 as the Colts claimed the team championship.
The Lions will advance to the regional tournament Sept. 22 at the River Oaks Country Club in Searcy. It is the second straight year the Lions have advanced to the regionals.
"We have really had a good year," said Lion Coach John Deaton. "It's the second year we've qualified for the regionals, and we have high expectations heading into the tournament at Searcy. We think we have a good chance to qualify for the state tournament again. Michael has had a super year. He is the leader of our team. He usually shoots around even par, and if we can give him some help, we will be in good shape."
Garrett Scott posted a score of 88 while Aaron Wallace shot a 95 to go along with Shedd's 73, giving the Lions a team score of 256, which tied them with Brookland, five strokes behind the champion Colts. Andrew Nelms shot a 97, but only the top three scores count toward the team total.
