Buffalo Island Central took a 6-3 victory over Riverside in the opener of the two team's doubleheader Tuesday afternoon at Lake City, before the Lady Rebels rebounded to take the nightcap 6-1 to earn a split in 2A-3 conference action.
The Lady Mustangs scored all six of their runs in the opener in the first two innings and held on for the victory. Lauryn Smith's RBI single plated BIC's first run before Corie Flannigan knocked in the second run of the inning with a solid single up the middle to score Smith. BIC went up 3-0 when Shelby Qualls scored on an error. Qualls reached first by drawing a base on balls and proceeded to steal second and third before scoring.
Riverside battled back when Kelsey Turner ripped a one-out triple in the bottom of the first and scored on an RBI groundout by Michelle Cobb to cut the BIC lead to 3-1.
The Lady Mustangs came right back in the top of the second, scoring three more times to take a 6-1 lead. Karla Marroquin, who picked up the win on the mound, and Qualls both had RBI singles in the inning.
Riverside scored single runs in the third and fourth innings to cut the lead to 6-3, but the Lady Rebels could get no closer as BIC hung on to take the opener.
Marroquin went the distance in gaining the victory, giving up three runs, two earned. The sophomore right hander gave up just three hits while fanning eight Lady Rebels. Kendra Staggs took the loss, giving up six runs, only two of which were earned. Staggs surrendered eight hits while walking three batters.
BIC jumped to a 1-0 lead in the nightcap when Sammi Fowler drilled a two-out RBI single up the middle, scoring Marroquin who drew a one-out walk and stole second.
The Lady Rebels struck for four runs in the bottom of the first to take a 4-1 lead. Kailey Holt began the rally with a triple down the right field line. Holt scored on a wild pitch to tie the score 1-1. Cobb drew a walk and came around to score when Brianna Driver ripped an RBI double, giving the Lady Rebels a 2-1 advantage. Marroquin uncorked consecutive wild pitches to score Driver, giving Riverside a 3-1 lead, and the Lady Rebels tacked on the fourth run of the inning on an error.
Riverside scored two more times in the bottom of the second. Morgan Emery led off the inning with an infield hit. Holt followed with a single to left field before Turner sacrificed both runners into scoring position with one out. Another wild pitch by Marroquin scored Emery before Driver's RBI single plated Holt, giving Riverside a five run lead.
Staggs picked up the win in the second game, going five innings. The right hander scattered seven hits while giving up just one run. Staggs finished with one walk and one strikeout.
BIC will return to action Monday when they host Turrell in a 4:00 contest at Monette. The Lady Mustangs will take on Armorel in a non-conference double header Tuesday afternoon at Monette before traveling to Cross County for a 2A-3 conference double header Thursday afternoon at Cherry Valley.
Riverside travels to Bay Monday afternoon to take on the Lady Yellowjackets in a 2A-3 conference tilt. The Lady Rebels will return home Tuesday afternoon in another conference match-up against Cross County at Lake City.
