Sophomore Blake Wheeler drilled four three pointers on his way to a 24 point night to lead four Lions in double figures in Manila's 77-74 non-conference victory over Rector Monday night, Feb. 4, at Manila.
Jonathan Rose scored 14, Cody Webb netted 12 while Chad Nunnally added 10. Ross Malloy and Trey McCormick tallied six points apiece, Frankie Cowgill scored three while Zach Birmingham added two to round out the Lion attack.
Manila hit 12-14 free throws and drilled nine treys on the night.
Justin Duke scored 24 points to lead Rector while Blake McCarroll and Derek Wyss added 17 and 16 points respectively. The Cougars finished 17-19 from the foul line and nailed seven treys on the night.
Manila held a 17-15 lead after the first quarter and took a 43-31 lead into the dressing room at the half. The Lions led 60-48 after three periods.
Earle slipped past Manila 69-61 in senior girls action despite a 25 point performance by sophomore Kimberly Wise. Rebekah White also hit double digits with 13 points. Colleen Kemp scored nine, Kristen Painter netted eight, Kelce Misner tallied five while Savannah Jones added one. The Lady Lions hit 11-22 free throws and made three treys.
Earle held a 15-8 lead after the first period and led 33-24 at the half. The Lady Bulldogs took a 52-42 lead into the fourth period.
The Lady Lions will enter 3A-3 District Tournament play when they take on the Piggott Lady Mohawks in a 4:00 tip-off Tuesday afternoon at Corning.
Manila's senior boys will follow the Lady Lions in District Tournament action Tuesday with a 5:30 contest with East Poinsett County.
