Riverside nailed 15 fourth quarter free throws to break open a tight game, sending the Rebels to a 45-32 victory over arch-rival Buffalo Island Central in the first round of the 2A-3 Junior Boys District Tournament Monday night, Feb. 4, at Bay.
The Rebels carried a 28-23 lead into the final frame, but built their advantage to as many as 16 points, 45-29, by hitting 15-16 charity tosses in a 2:00 span midway through the final period.
Jake Love poured in a game high 20 points to lead the Rebels while Josh Anderson also hit double digits with 11 points. Riverside held an 8-6 lead after the first period and took a 17-14 lead into the dressing room at the half.
Dillon Hargrove's three pointer tied the score at the 5:54 mark of the third period. The two teams traded buckets, but the Rebels took the lead for good on an Anderson free throw with 4:42 left in the third quarter. A 10-footer by Love stretched the lead to 22-19, and Love connected again with a three pointer at the 3:02 mark to give Riverside a 25-19 advantage. Back to back buckets by BIC's James Tate and Mark Stone cut the Rebel lead to two, but Love struck again from beyond the three point arc as the third quarter horn sounded, giving the Rebels a five point lead.
Riverside also got five points apiece from Morgan Fletcher and Cole Winford while Luke Moyer chipped in four. Riverside finished the night 16-28 from the foul line and hit three treys, all by Love.
Tate led BIC with 11 points while Taylor Morgan chipped in eight. Hargrove and Stone tallied five points apiece while Nathan Whitlow added three.
Riverside fell in the semi-finals, dropping a 29-25 decision to Turrell. The Rebels jumped to an early 9-0 lead, capped off by a three pointer by Chris Hood. Turrell cut the lead to 9-3 by the end of the period.
Riverside upped their advantage to 15-5, aided by back to back buckets by Love, but Turrell scored the last six points of the first half to cut the Rebel lead to 15-11 at halftime.
The Rockets scored seven points in the third period, as the Rebels went ice cold from the field, going scoreless in the quarter. Turrell took an 18-15 lead into the final frame.
The game remained tight throughout the fourth quarter, with Turrell clinging to a slim lead. A 12-footer by Love with 1:01 left in the game pulled the Rebels to 25-22, but that was as close as Riverside would get. A lay-in by Turrell's Paris Jeans and a pair of free throws by Jamar Sturtivant pushed the Rocket lead to 29-22 to put the game out of reach, ending Riverside's season.
Deandre Price led Turrel with eight points while Sturtivant added seven. The Rockets finished 5-7 from the foul line and hit two three pointers.
Love led Riverside with eight points while Anderson and Fletcher scored six apiece. Hood scored three while Jake Emery added two. Riverside hit 4-10 free throws and made one trey.
Riverside placed three players on the All-Conference team, including Jake Love, Josh Anderson and Luke Moyer.
Dillon Hargrove and James Tate were named All-Conference for BIC.
