Earle showed why they are the 2A-3 conference leaders Friday night at the
Mustang Athletic Complex, rolling to a 33-9 first period lead en route to a 74-58
victory over Buffalo Island Central.
Earle grabbed a 7-0 lead to begin the game before BIC finally got on the board
with a 10-foot jumper by junior Tab Wildy. Earle scored the game's next six
points, capped off by a steal and lay-up by Bulldog Donald Ward, giving Earle a
13-2 lead at the 4:40 mark of the opening stanza.
BIC's Trevor Matheny connected on a conventional three point play with 4:20
left, but Earle's Steven Meredith matched Matheny's three point effort with one
of his own to push the Bulldog lead back to 11. Earle closed the quarter
outscoring the Mustangs 14-4 to take a 24 point lead into the second period.
BIC tried to fight back in the second period, but the Bulldogs closed the half
with a 44-27 lead, despite back to back three pointers from Mustang senior guard
BIC played without Head Coach Dion Hargrove, who was absent due to the sudden
death of his brother.
The Bulldogs placed all five starters in double figures, led by Ward's 18
points. Meredith scored 15 points while Trey Smith netted 14. Corbin McKenzie
tallied 13 points and Michael Wilson added 10. The Bulldogs were 19-31 from the
foul line and finished with one trey.
BIC drilled eight three pointers on the night but went to the foul line just 12
times, connecting on six. Griggs paced the Mustangs with 17 points while Matheny
added 15 more. Wildy netted eight, Shane Barnes scored seven, Lee Birdno tallied
four while Matt Taylor added three. Matt Honnoll and Heath Hawkins contributed
two points apiece.
BIC began the week with a 57-44 loss at Turrell. BIC held a 16-15 lead after the
first period before the Rockets rallied to take a 28-27 lead at the half.
Turrell pushed their advantage to 42-35 after three quarters.
Trevor Matheny led the Mustangs with 14 points while Bruce Delaney also scored
14 to lead the Rockets.
In junior high action, BIC fell to Earle 58-37. Eighth grader Dillon Hargrove
led the Mustangs with 11 points while James Tate scored six. Jeremy Smith netted
four while Ben Cole, Mark Stone, Drey Crabtree and Forrest Robertson added three
points apiece. Taylor Morgan and Adam Tompkins added two points each.
The Junior Mustangs dropped a 58-38 decision Tuesday night at Turrell.
The Senior Mustangs will close out the regular season Friday night when they
host Gosnell on senior night at the Mustangs Athletic Complex.
The Junior Mustangs will open District Tournament play Monday at 4:30 against
Riverside at Bay.
