Mustangs rip Indians 71-50

Seniors Jordan Griggs and Trevor Matheny combined for 46 points to lead Buffalo Island Central to a 71-50 thrashing at Marked Tree Friday night. Griggs poured in six three pointers as the Mustangs finished with nine treys on the night.

BIC led 19-7 after the first quarter and never trailed in improving to 13-12 overall and 6-5 in 2A-3 conference play. Three different Mustangs drilled shots from beyond the three point arc in the first period as the Mustangs built a 12 point lead. Shane Barnes and Matheny finished the quarter with back to back triples.

Matheny began the second period hitting three free throws after being fouled on a three point attempt before Griggs hit his second trey of the night, giving BIC a 25-9 lead with 6:15 left in the half. Marked Tree went on a 6-0 run to pull within 25-15 and kept the margin at 10 until BIC's Lee Birdno stuck in an offensive rebound just before the halftime buzzer, giving the Mustangs a 33-21 lead heading into the dressing room.

BIC put the game away in the third period behind the scoring of Griggs and Matheny, who tallied 18 of the Mustang's 22 third quarter points to push the BIC lead to 55-36 entering the final frame.

The Indians would get no closer than 17 points the rest of the way as the Mustangs rolled to the 21 point victory.

Griggs finished the night with 25 points while Matheny poured in 21 more. Barnes tallied double digits scoring 12 points. Matt Taylor scored three while Matt Honnoll, Ricky Cordero, Tab Wildy, Lee Birdno and James Littlefield all netted two points apiece.

Gavin Thompson led Marked Tree with 18 points while Tyrone Doggett added 15 more.

In junior high action, BIC raced to a 54-34 victory behind Dillon Hargrove's 16 points. Hargrove poured in four three pointers on the night. BIC held a 12-6 lead after the first period and led 28-16 at the half. The Mustangs put the game away in the third period, taking a 40-21 lead heading into the final quarter.

James Tate finished with eight points, Mark Stone and Taylor Morgan tallied six points apiece, Jeremy Smith, Wes Colbert and Josh McCormick pitched in four points each, while Blake Carr netted three. Hunter Keiter pitched in two while Caleb Miller added one.

Allen Buchannon led Marked Tree with 10 points.

BIC began the week with a 56-45 victory over Cross County at the Mustang Athletic Complex. Jordan Griggs led the Mustangs with 17 points while Matt Honnoll and Trevor Matheny added 13 and 12 points respectively. Matt Taylor scored seven, Shane Barnes netted five and Dalton Womack added two for the Mustangs, who hit 11-17 free throws and drilled five three pointers.

BIC led 13-8 after the first period before the Thunderbirds battled back to within 22-21 at the half. The Mustangs carried a 37-31 lead into the final period.

Jake Pierce led Cross County with 11 points. The Thunderbirds hit only 10-26 from the foul line and finished with three treys.

In junior high action, Dillon Hargrove's 24 points led BIC past Cross County 49-44. Jeremy Smith pitched in 12 more.

The Mustangs will play a pair of non-conference games this week, traveling to Bald Knob Tuesday night before hosting Weiner Thursday night. The Mustangs will celebrate Homecoming Friday night against the Rector Cougars.
