Buffalo Island Central's Lady Mustangs traveled to Earle Tuesday night and came away with a sweep, but their male counterparts didn't fare as well as the league leading Bulldogs returned the favor in 2A-3 conference basketball action.
The Lady Mustangs rolled to a 78-59 victory in the senior high contest to improve to 17-3 overall and a perfect 9-0 in league play. Senior guard Jessica Shepard poured in a game high 27 points to lead three Lady Mustangs in double digits as BIC maintained their grasp on first place in the league.
Sammi Fowler scored 14 points and Lauryn Smith pitched in 12 more for BIC. The Lady Mustangs jumped to a 19-8 first period lead and held a 38-28 halftime advantage. BIC put the game away in the third quarter, outscoring Earle 21-11 to take a 59-39 league into the final frame.
Jordon Miller scored eight points, Harley Damron netted six, Whitlee Rolland tallied four while Holly Dempsey added three points. Corie Flannigan and Karla Marroquin pitched in two points apiece. Chelsie Nix snared 10 rebounds for the Lady Mustangs, who hit 18-27 free throws and nailed four three pointers on the night.
Diamond Southern led Earle with 17 points. The Lady Bulldogs hit only 6-18 from the charity stripe, but drilled six treys.
In junior high action, BIC remained perfect in league play with a hard fought 51-43
victory over the Lady Bulldogs. Brittany Fowler led BIC with 17 points while Jenna Pike completed a double-double with 15 points and 12 steals. Taylor Owens scored nine, Demi Hargrove netted seven, while Kalee James, Amber Rolland and Cassidy Qualls all added one point apiece.
BIC (16-1, 9-0) hit 24-35 foul shots and made one three pointer.
Cimone Poole led Earle with 13 points. The Lady Bulldogs went 6-17 from the foul stripe and made one trey.
Earle rebounded in boys action, winning the senior game 78-54 and the junior game
Steven Meredith pumped in a game high 25 points to lead the Bulldogs, who hit 14-25 foul shots and nailed six three pointers.
Earle took a 13-10 first period lead but exploded for 32 second quarter points to take a 45-24 advantage into the dressing room at the half. The Bulldogs held a 60-42 lead heading into the final quarter.
Trevor Matheny nailed five treys on his way to a team high 19 points for BIC. Matt Taylor and Jordan Griggs also tallied double digits, scoring 11 and 10 points respectively. Shane Barnes netted eight, Matt Honnoll had five, while Brandon Atkeison pitched in one. BIC connected on 6-11 free throws and drilled eight treys.
In junior high action, Earle led 9-6 after the first period and 21-14 at the half. The Bulldogs increased their margin to 31-18 after three quarters and put the game away in the fourth period, despite hitting just 3-14 foul shots.
Dillon Hargrove paced BIC with eight points while Taylor Morgan scored five and James Tate added four. Josh McCormick and Drey Crabtree tallied three points each while Blake Carr added two to round out the Mustang scoring.
BIC was 3-6 from the foul stripe and hit four three pointers.
