Manila picked up a pair of conference wins last week in senior high basketball action, knocking off Harrisburg 56-41 and Hughes 57-47.
The Lady Lions used a 23-8 third quarter spurt to break open a 19-19 halftime tie to pull away from the Lady Hornets Monday night at Harrisburg. The two teams had trouble finding the bucket in the first quarter, which ended in a 3-3 stalemate.
Sophomore Kimberly Wise scored a game high 24 points, which included three treys, to lead Manila. Michelle Daniel also hit double figures for Manila scoring 15 points. The Lady Lions, who finished the night just 14-32 from the foul line, also got eight points from Rebekah White while Colleen Kemp and Katie Donner chipped in four points apiece. Kelce Misner added one point.
Kimberly Wise poured in 27 more points in Thursday night's home win over Hughes. The Lady Lions took a 14-10 first period advantage and held a 32-24 edge at the half. Manila led 45-38 entering the final frame.
Colleen Kemp scored 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds while Rebekah White and Kelce Misner chipped in six points apiece. Kristen Painter had four points while Michelle Daniel added two to round out the Manila attack. The Lady Lions shot a blistering 20-25 from the free throw line and finished with three treys.
Jasmine Troop led Hughes with 20 points. The Lady Blue Devils connected on 3-7 from the foul line.
In junior high action, Manila dropped a 38-35 decision to Harrisburg on Monday night. Brittany Craine scored 13 points and Peyton Joyner added 10 more to lead Manila. Shelby Wallace scored five, Taylor Piercy netted four, while Taylor Craig added three. Manila hit 10-19 free throws and made two three pointers.
Harrisburg took an 11-8 lead after the first quarter before Manila battled back to tie the score 17-17 at the half. The Lady Hornets took a slim 26-25 edge into the final period.
The Lady Lions lost 40-29 Thursday night against Hughes. Peyton Joyner led Manila with 10 points while Brittany Craine scored nine more. Taylor Craig netted four points while Jordan Robertson, Shelby Wallace and Courtney Craine chipped in two points apiece. Manila hit 5-10 free throws.
Hughes took a 10-4 lead after the first period and led 21-9 at the half. The Lady Blue Devils led 28-16 heading into the final frame. Sybil Thomas led Hughes with 15 points. The Lady Blue Devils hit 4-8 foul shots and connected on two three pointers.
The Lady Lions return to action Monday night when they travel to Brookland to take on the Lady Bearcats in 3A-3 conference play.
