Vernie Smith, 87, of Caraway died Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2007, at St. Bernards Medical Center in Jonesboro. She was born in Black Oak Oct. 27, 1919, to Samuel Joseph and Mary Whitley Smith. She was a homemaker and retired employee of Basler Electric Co. in Caraway and a member of the Church of Christ in Mangrum.
Survivors include three daughters, Phyllis Long of Cherokee Village, Glenda Sands and Janet Brewer, both of Caraway; four sons, Morrell "Smokey" Mangrum of Leachville, Jerry Henry, David Smith and Gary Don Smith, all of Caraway; a sister, Dean Smith of Indiana; two brothers, Trumann Smith of Rivervale and Carroll J. Smith of Imperial, Mo.; 12 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and four sisters.
Services were 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the chapel of Langford-Bookout Funeral Home at Jonesboro with Jerry Chub Qualls officiating. Burial was in Caraway Cemetery.
