Michael Shedd's three over par 73 helped lead Manila to a runner-up finish in last week's 3A District Tournament Championship at the Victory Lake Golf Course in Corning, advancing the Lions to the regional tournament Sept. 17-19 in Little Rock.
Shedd's score was three shots off the pace of medalist Logan Hart of Corning, who helped lead the Bobcats to the team title. Hart fired an even par 70, edging teammate Zack Brown who came away with a one over 71. The Bobcats shot a team score of 220 to finish nine shots ahead of the runner-up Lions, who came away with a 229 score.
Drew Warren and Chad Nunnally shot a 77 and 79 respectively as the Lions advanced to the regionals for the first time under the guidance of Head Coach John Deaton. Trey McCormick shot an 80 for Manila, who used the team's top three scores to determine the team total.
"This is the first year for us to qualify as a team since I became the golf coach," said Deaton. "I am very pleased with our finish. We played especially well, considering it was Corning's home course."
The Lions finished 16 shots better than third place Brookland, who fired a 243. Piggott came away fourth with a score of 259.
"I am very happy, finishing 16 shots better than Brookland," said Deaton. "A 229 score is very good for us. We are looking forward to playing at the Stone Links Country Club in Little Rock when regionals begin. Our kids are excited and I am very proud of them."
