Buffalo Island Central Baseball Roundup

Wednesday, April 4, 2007

Buffalo Island Central suffered a pair of tough luck losses to Westside and Bay last week in senior high baseball action. The Mustangs took a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the seventh only to see Westside rally for a 4-3 win Thursday afternoon at Westside. BIC spotted Bay a 9-0 lead before rallying to pull within one run, before the Yellowjackets put the game away with a four run seventh in a 13-8 Bay victory Friday afternoon at Monette.

BIC jumped on Westside with back to back doubles in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead. Junior Chad Williams, who had the first double, scored from second when Garrett Qualls followed with an RBI two-bagger. The Mustangs increased their lead to 2-0 on an RBI single by senior Jordan Phillips in the fifth inning.

Westside tied the game, scoring twice in the bottom of the fifth, thanks to a Mustang error. BIC rallied in the top of the sixth to take a 3-2 lead. Williams scored the go-ahead run on a passed ball to give BIC a one run lead heading into the final inning.

The Warriors pulled the game out, scoring twice in the bottom of the seventh. Jacob Sharp started the winning rally with a lead-off single, followed by a bunt single by Dustin Jones. Cody Patterson sacrificed both runners into scoring position, bringing Josh Goodon to the plate. Goodon drove in the tying run with an RBI grounder. Brock Johnson's RBI single brought home the winning run, giving the Warriors the victory. Michael Jones picked up the win for Westside, going the distance in pitching a four hitter.

Jordan Phillips saw his record drop to 1-2 in picking up the loss. Phillips relieved starting pitcher Chad Williams, who went the first six plus innings for the Mustangs. Williams gave up the first two hits of the seventh inning before Phillips came on in relief. Williams gave up three runs, all unearned, while surrendering a total of four hits. The junior righthander finished with four strikeouts.

Williams led BIC at the plate with a triple and a single while scoring two runs. Brandon Atkeison scored a run and stole a base while Cody Smith picked up an RBI.

In a battle for first place in the 2A-3 conference, Bay scored four runs in the first inning, one in the second, and added four more in the third to grab a 9-0 lead that the Mustangs would not overcome.

BIC fought back however, scoring six times in the bottom of the third, to pull within 9-6. BIC tacked on single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to cut the Jacket lead to 9-8, only to see Bay put the game away with a four run seventh.

Garrett Bollinger went the distance in picking up the victory for Bay. Bollinger gave up seven hits while striking out six. The senior righthander also drilled a home run and a triple while driving in three runs. The Yellowjackets improved to 6-4 overall and a perfect 5-0 in 2A-3 conference action.

Garrett Qualls went three innings, giving up nine runs, four earned, in suffering the loss. The senior southpaw gave up seven hits while walking five and striking out three. Trevor Matheny came on in relief, pitching the final four innings. Matheny gave up four runs, two earned. The junior righthander surrendered two hits, struck out three and walked three.

Garrett Qualls had a single and scored two runs. Chad Williams, Cody Smith, Heath Hawkins, and Brandon Atkeison all had singles and scored runs. Jansen Newcom and Trevor Matheny picked up singles while Jordan Phillips scored twice.

BIC (7-5, 4-1) will return to action Tuesday when they host Crowley's Ridge Academy in a 4:30 conference match-up. The Mustangs were scheduled to play Rector Wednesday and Brookland Thursday, but have cancelled both games due to the County Tournament being held at Monette beginning Thursday April 5th. The tournament will run through Saturday, April 7. The Mustangs's game with Rector will be made up at a later date.
