Freshman Brandon Atkeison drove in the winning run with an RBI double in the top of the 10th inning as Buffalo Island Central rallied for a 9-7 extra inning win over Paragould Thursday afternoon in the Xtra Innings Tournament at Westside.
BIC took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second, only to see Paragould tie the score with two runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. The Mustangs took a 5-2 lead in the top of the third, scoring three times, but the Rams cut the margin to 5-3 with a run in their half of the third.
Gerrie Robertson hit the first of his two home runs, a three run shot, in the bottom of the fifth to put the Rams on top 6-5. But the Mustangs tied the game in the top of the seventh when senior Garrett Qualls doubled home Chad Williams to tie the score 6-6.
Qualls pitched the final two innings to pick up the win and improve his record to 2-1. The senior lefthander gave up a solo homer to Robertson in the bottom of the 10th, but that was the only hit the southpaw surrendered. Qualls fanned four while walking two. Williams pitched the first eight innings for the Mustangs, giving up six runs on six hits while striking out four and walking one.
Qualls finished with a single, a double, and an RBI while Williams had a single, a double, an RBI and scored twice. Cody Smith had two singles and two RBI's, stole a base and scored three times. Heath Hawkins singled, had an RBI, and scored a run. Atkeison finished with an RBI double while Jordan Phillips and Jansen Newcom scored one run apiece.
The Mustangs dropped an 8-7 heartbreaker Saturday afternoon against Trumann at Nettleton's Raider Field.
Trumann took an early 2-0 lead, scoring runs in the first and second innings, but the Mustangs rallied to go on top 3-2, scoring three times in the top of the third. Garrett Qualls had an RBI single in the inning while Jordan Phillips and Cody Smith also crossed the plate.
Jacob Jones knocked in Kyle Barker to tie the score in the third, but the Mustangs went back on top, scoring two times in the fourth, with the big hit coming off the bat of junior Trevor Matheny, who had an RBI single.
BIC took a 6-4 lead into the sixth inning, but the Wildcats plated two runs to tie the score at 6-6. The Mustangs came right back when Matheny knocked in his second run of the game with a two-out RBI single to left field in the top of the seventh, giving BIC a 7-6 lead.
Trumann took advantage of a pair of Mustang errors in the bottom of the seventh to score two runs and steal the win.
Barker led Trumann at the plate with three doubles while Dustin Jones and Jacob Jones had a pair of hits apiece. Wayne Clements picked up the victory for the Wildcats, pitching the final two innings.
Jordan Phillips pitched the seventh inning and took the loss for the Mustangs.
BIC (7-3) will return to action Thursday when they travel to Westside for a non-conference game. The Mustangs will play host to Bay Friday afternoon in a 2A-3 conference game before hosting Stuttgart Saturday afternoon at 1:00 in another non-conference tilt.
