Buffalo Island Central Coach Todd Rhoades loves to play small ball, and his Mustangs played it to perfection, scoring six times in the third inning without hitting the ball out of the infield, propelling BIC to a 10-7 victory over Hoxie Tuesday afternoon at Monette.
Chad Williams got the Mustangs' third inning rally started with an infield single off the glove of Hoxie pitcher Tanner Jarrett. Centerfielder Garrett Qualls legged out another infield hit to put runners at first and second before freshman Cody Smith bunted his way on to load the bases with no outs. Heath Hawkins ripped a two run single up the middle, tying the score at 3-3. Josh Freeman laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt, scoring Smith from third to put the Mustangs ahead 4-3.

Hoxie cut the Mustang lead to 7-5 with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth on a two run single by Tyler Crisler, but BIC came right back with three runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth. Lead-off batter Trevor Matheny's RBI infield hit scored Newcom from third, putting BIC up 8-5. The Mustangs added the final two runs of the inning on back to back wild pitches by Jarrett, giving the Mustangs a 10-5 cushion.
Winning pitcher Jordan Phillips, who went the first six innings, was relieved to start the seventh by Chad Williams. Hoxie put the first two batters on base with the help of an error and a base hit by Jon Lawrence. Williams got the next two batters out, but gave up a clean single to left field to Tyler Crisler, loading the bases. Blake Snow delivered a two-run single to pull Hoxie to within 10-7, bringing the tying run to the plate, but Williams got Jake Hitt to ground out to second, preserving the victory and picking up the save.
