Buffalo Island Central Coach Todd Rhoades loves to play small ball, and his Mustangs played it to perfection, scoring six times in the third inning without hitting the ball out of the infield, propelling BIC to a 10-7 victory over Hoxie Tuesday afternoon at Monette.

Chad Williams got the Mustangs' third inning rally started with an infield single off the glove of Hoxie pitcher Tanner Jarrett. Centerfielder Garrett Qualls legged out another infield hit to put runners at first and second before freshman Cody Smith bunted his way on to load the bases with no outs. Heath Hawkins ripped a two run single up the middle, tying the score at 3-3. Josh Freeman laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt, scoring Smith from third to put the Mustangs ahead 4-3.

Junior Jansen Newcom beat out another infield hit, scoring Hawkins with the fourth run of the inning. A Hoxie error gave BIC a 6-3 lead, and Trevor Matheny capped off the Mustang inning with an RBI groundout, scoring Brandon Atkeison and giving BIC a 7-3 lead.

Hoxie cut the Mustang lead to 7-5 with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth on a two run single by Tyler Crisler, but BIC came right back with three runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth. Newcom started the BIC rally with a one-out single to center. Atkeison reached base on a Hoxie error, putting runners on the corners. Lead-off batter Trevor Matheny's RBI infield hit scored Newcom from third, putting BIC up 8-5. The Mustangs added the final two runs of the inning on back to back wild pitches by Jarrett, giving the Mustangs a 10-5 cushion.

Winning pitcher Jordan Phillips, who went the first six innings, was relieved to start the seventh by Chad Williams. Hoxie put the first two batters on base with the help of an error and a base hit by Jon Lawrence. Williams got the next two batters out, but gave up a clean single to left field to Tyler Crisler, loading the bases. Blake Snow delivered a two-run single to pull Hoxie to within 10-7, bringing the tying run to the plate, but Williams got Jake Hitt to ground out to second, preserving the victory and picking up the save.

BIC finished with 13 hits, seven infield or bunt hits. Matheny and Newcom led the Mustangs with three hits apiece. Matheny had two RBIs, scored twice and stole a base. Newcom drove in a run and scored twice. Williams finished with two hits and a run scored while Hawkins had a pair of hits, scored a run and drove in two runs. Qualls had one hit, an RBI and a run scored. Phillips had a hit and stolen two bases. Smith finished with a hit and a run scored while Freeman added an RBI. The Mustangs stranded seven runners.

Phillips pitched six innings, giving up five runs, one earned, while scattering six hits. The senior righthander fanned four and issued one walk. Williams pitched one inning, surrendering two earned runs on three hits. The junior finished with one strikeout.

Jarrett pitched six innings to take the loss for Hoxie, giving up all 10 runs, six earned. Jarrett surrendered 13 hits, struck out four, walked two and had two wild pitches.

The victory moves BIC to 5-2 on the year while Hoxie drops to 3-11.
