The Mustangs picked up a pair of conference victories last week, beating Cross County 8-4 Monday afternoon on the road before coming home to take a 2-1 win over Rector Tuesday afternoon.
Buffalo Island Central closed the week with a non-conference game against Valley View, but the Blazers used the long ball to run away with a 20-5 win Friday afternoon at Monette.
Senior Garrett Qualls had a pair of hits and an RBI while scoring twice and freshman Cody Smith added a two-run double and scored a run to lead the Mustangs over Cross County. BIC scored five times in the third inning and added three more runs in the fifth after dropping behind 3-0 early to post the come from behind win.
Jordan Phillips had a hit, stole a base and scored twice. Brandon Atkeison swiped two bases and scored once while Chad Williams and Trevor Matheny scored a run apiece to wrap up the Mustang attack. Phillips went the distance to pick up the win, going seven innings while striking out 11 Thunderbirds. The senior righthander gave up four runs on four hits while issuing four base on balls.
In Tuesday's win over Rector, junior Chad Williams and Garrett Qualls drove in a run apiece to push the Mustangs past the Cougars. Williams went 3-3 at the plate and stole two bases while scoring a run. Qualls picked up the win, going seven innings, allowing one unearned run on just one hit. The southpaw fanned 11 and walked four. Jordan Phillips had a single and stole two bases while Trevor Matheny scored a run.
BIC took a 1-0 lead over Valley View in the first inning when Trevor Matheny crossed the plate on a wild pitch by Blazer pitcher Chris Moore.
Valley View stormed back in the top of the second, scoring six times, highlighted by Cody Rollins' three run homer. Thad Thornburg also had a two-run double in the inning.
BIC fought back with a pair of runs in their half of the second, scoring on a pair of RBI ground-outs off the bats of freshmen Brandon Atkeison and Josh Freeman.
The Blazers blew the game open in the third, scoring seven times. Kade Lynch's two-run single ignited the Valley View outburst.
Rollins finished the day 3-4 and drove in six runs. Jacob Ashburn tallied a pair of hits, including a solo homer to straightaway centerfield. Aaron Moore also added a pair of hits and two RBI's to lead the Blazers.
Chad Williams had a pair of hits for the Mustangs while freshman Heath Hawkins and Garrett Qualls also picked up a pair of base hits. Williams took the loss for BIC, who drops to 4-2 overall. The Blazers improved to 9-2 on the year.
Buffalo Island Central will play host to Hoxie Tuesday afternoon in a 4:30 contest before opening play in the Xtra Inning Tournament at Greene County Tech March 22-24.
