Jordan Phillips pumped in 21 points, including 14 in a decisive third quarter Mustang run, to lead Buffalo Island Central past Rector 62-38 Friday night at Rector.
Phillips, who also pulled down a game high 16 rebounds on his way to a double-double, controlled both ends of the backboard while scoring on several offensive stick-backs as the Mustangs pulled away by outscoring Rector 28-9 in the third quarter.
BIC held a slim 12-10 lead after the opening period as neither team could find an offensive rhythm in the early going. The Mustangs took a seven point lead into the dressing room at intermission, 23-16, and put the Cougars away behind the strong play of Phillips and senior guard Terry Roach, who registered 15 points.
Garrett Qualls scored seven points, Trevor Matheny netted six, Matt Honnoll tallied four, Jordan Griggs contributed three, while Lance Davis, Nick Birdno and Tab Wildy added two points apiece. BIC finished 14-26 from the foul line and hit four three pointers.
Jackie Graham led Rector with 11 points as the Cougars made 9-13 free throws and finished with three treys.
In junior high action, BIC posted a pair of victories, rolling past Weiner 58-21 Monday night at Monette before fighting past Rector 50-42 Friday night at Rector.
Matt Taylor scored a game high 16 points in the Mustang's win over Weiner, while Cody Smith and Brandon Atkeison also hit double digits with 13 and 10 points respectively. Dalton Womack and Adrian Mondragon scored four points apiece, Jeremy Smith and Josh McCormick had three points each, Ben Cole and Dominick Marquez tallied two points apiece while Hunter Keiter added one point.
Cody Smith pumped in 15 points while Matt Taylor added 14 more in BIC's win over Rector. Heath Hawkins drilled three treys to add 11 more points while Brandon Atkeison scored eight points and Dalton Womack added two. BIC finished 10-22 from the foul line and hit four three pointers.
Cody Banning scored 11 points while Garrett Evers added 10 more to lead Rector, who hit 6-9 free throws and finished with two three pointers.
The Cougars held a 13-11 first period advantage before BIC rallied to take a 28-27 halftime lead. BIC took a 38-30 lead into the final quarter and held on for the win.
BIC will return to action Tuesday night when they host Turrell at the Mustang Athletic Complex in Monette before traveling to Earle to face the league leading Bulldogs Friday night.
