Manila carried the momentum from last week's crucial conference win at Marmaduke into Monday night's game against Corning and came away with a 49-41 victory over the Lady Bobcats as three Lady Lions registered double figures.
Freshman guard Kimberly Wise pumped in 16 points while junior Michele Daniel and senior Katie Veach scored 15 and 10 points respectively as Manila held off a second half Corning rally to pull out the win.
Manila grabbed a seemingly comfortable 17-5 lead after the first quarter before Corning closed the gap to 23-17 at the half. The Lady Bobcats pulled to within 32-31 heading into the final quarter before the Lady Lions pulled away for their 16th victory of the season.
Rebekah White chipped in 6 points while Kelce Misner added two more for Manila, who hit 6-10 free throws and nailed three treys on the night.
Lasey Cate scored 15 points while Chelsea Carpenter added 10 more to pace the Lady Bobcat attack. Corning managed just six free throw attempts, connecting on three while pumping in six three pointers.
Manila ran into a red hot Hoxie team Thursday night at Manila, dropping a 58-37 decision to the Lady Mustangs.
Hoxie held a 10-5 lead after the first period before taking a 30-19 advantage into the dressing room at the half. The Lady Mustangs put the game away in the third quarter, outscoring Manila 21-5 to take a commanding 51-24 lead into the final frame.
Rachel Goff scored 15 points while Megan Black and Ashley Glenn added 13 and 12 points respectively for Hoxie, who finished 17-22 from the free throw line.
Hoxie used a sticky defense as the Lady Lions failed to place anyone in double figures. Michele Daniel topped Manila with nine points while Katie Veach scored eight and Rebekah White added seven. Kimberly Wise had five points, Colleen Kemp netted four while Heather Dozhier and Kelce Misner added two points apiece. Manila hit 8-9 from the foul line.
The loss dropped the Lady Lions to 16-10 overall and 10-4 in conference play.
In junior high action, Manila dropped a pair of conference contests, losing to Corning 39-21 Monday night before dropping a 35-16 decision to Hoxie Thursday night.
Rachel George scored 16 points as Corning rallied from a 6-4 first period deficit to pull ahead 15-12 at the half. The Lady Bobcats stretched their lead to 30-18 after three quarters and coasted in for the win.
Manila was paced by Jonna Dodd who scored six points while Savannah Jones and Kristen Painter added four points apiece. Maegan Presson, Katie Donner and Brittany Bennett scored two points apiece while Taylor Craig added one.
Amy Galbreath's 14 points led Hoxie over Manila on Thursday night.
Kristen Painter led the Lady Lions with six points. Savannah Jones scored three, Katie Donner, Maegan Presson and Jordan Robertson added two points each while Jonna Dodd pitched in one.
Manila will return to action Monday night when they host league leading East Poinsett County before hosting the Piggott Lady Mohawks in another conference match-up Thursday night.
