Buffalo Island Central placed three players in double figures on their way to a 66-53 victory over Marked Tree Friday night at the Monette Athletic Complex. Jordan Phillips pumped in 20 points, Terry Roach scored 19 more and Lance Davis chipped in 12 as the Mustangs improved to 15-11 overall and, more importantly, moved their league mark to 9-4.
The Mustangs held a 14-10 advantage after the first period before outscoring the Indians 19-10 in the second quarter to grab a 33-20 halftime lead. BIC stretched their margin to 54-35 entering the final quarter and coasted to the win.
Dee Love poured in a game high 23 points while Marcus McKay added 11 more for the Indians.
The Mustangs began the week on the road Tuesday when they traveled to Cross County, dropping a tough 78-73 contest to the rejuvenated Thunderbirds. The T-Birds, rounding into shape after a long football season, had three players combine for 54 points as Brian Hopkins, Jace Hopkins, and Dylan Karnes all scored 18 points each. Jay Selvy added 14 more for the Thunderbirds, who hit 12-23 free throws and nailed four three pointers on the night.
BIC placed five players in double figures, led by Jordan Phillips' 18 points. Garrett Qualls scored 13 while Lance Davis, Trevor Matheny and Terry Roach all scored 12 points apiece. Nick Birdno and Jordan Griggs added three points each for the Mustangs, who connected on 19-28 from the foul line while hitting six treys.
BIC held a slim 21-20 lead after the first period and went into the dressing room at the half holding a 40-38 advantage. The Thunderbirds came back in the third quarter to take a 56-53 lead into the final frame.
In junior high action, BIC recorded a pair of conference victories as they knocked off Cross County 48-30 Tuesday night before rolling over Marked Tree 60-32 Friday night.
Cody Smith scored 16 points while Matt Taylor added 14 more in the Mustang's win over Cross County. Brandon Atkeison connected for seven points, Dalton Womack had three while Heath Hawkins, Ben Cole, Adrian Mondragon and Josh Freeman added two points apiece.
The Mustangs went 13-22 from the foul line and hit three treys. BIC led 10-4 after the first quarter, 22-7 at the half and carried a 38-18 lead into the final frame.
Cody Smith burned the nets for 22 points in the Mustang's 28 point rout over Marked Tree. Brandon Atkeison scored nine points, Dalton Womack netted seven, Dominick Marquez collected six, Ben Cole tallied five, Heath Hawkins had four, Matt Taylor scored three while Jeremy Smith and Adrian Mondragon added two points apiece.
The Mustangs hit 10-17 from the foul line and ripped four three pointers. BIC jumped to a 14-4 first quarter lead and blew the game open in the second quarter, outscoring the Indians 20-7 to take a 34-11 halftime lead. BIC went into the fourth quarter leading 45-21 and coasted home to the win.
The Junior Mustangs will return to action Tuesday night when they host Weiner at the Monette Athletic Complex before traveling to Rector on Friday night.
The Senior Mustangs will be off until Friday night's conference battle with the Rector Cougars.
