Lady Lions defeat Hughes, fall to Campbell

Manila placed three players in double figures in a 53-20 rout of Hughes in 3A-3 conference basketball action Monday night at Manila before dropping a heartbreaking 59-56 overtime decision on a last second shot Tuesday night at Campbell, Mo.

The Lady Lions jumped to an early 19-4 lead and never looked back in their win over the Lady Blue Devils. Manila increased their lead to 32-10 at the half and held a commanding 50-18 lead after three quarters.

Michelle Daniel poured in 17 points, freshman Kimberly Wise nailed three treys in scoring 15 points while Katie Veach added 10 more to lead the Lady Lions. Heather Dohzier netted six points while Chantel Hames added five for Manila, who hit just 8-22 from the foul line but connected on five three pointers.

Jasmine Troud paced Hughes with 12 points. The Lady Blue Devils shot a miserable 0-10 from the foul line.

Manila's game with Campbell, Mo., was a see-saw affair that saw Campbell hold a 9-7 first quarter lead before the Lady Lions fought back to take a 21-17 advantage into the dressing room at halftime. Campbell outscored the Lions 15-6 in the third quarter to take a 32-27 lead into the final frame, but Manila rallied to tie the score 47-47, sending the game into overtime before Campbell pulled out the victory with a last second three pointer.

Katie Veach topped Manila with 17 points while Michelle Daniel and Kimberly Wise added 12 and 11 points respectively. Kelce Misner put in eight points, Rebekah White netted six, while Heather Dohzier added two. Manila sank 10-18 from the foul stripe and nailed four three pointers on the night.

Dani Nelson led Campbell with 20 points while Tiffany Cunningham added 12 more. Campbell was 15-24 from the free throw line and hit two treys.

In junior high action, Manila dropped a tough 41-36 overtime decision to Hughes, despite Savannah Jones' game high 14 points.

Manila led throughout the contest before the Lady Blue Devils rallied to send the game into overtime. The Lady Lions held a 10-6 first period advantage and led 18-16 at the half. Manila maintained a 28-26 lead going into the fourth quarter before Hughes came back to tie the game at 34-34 at the end of regulation. The Lady Blue Devils outscored Manila 7-2 in the overtime period to claim the win.

Maegan Presson scored eight points while Jonna Dodd and Kristen Painter added six points apiece. Katie Donner netted two points.

Campbell came away with a 40-23 win over the Junior Lions on Tuesday night.

Savannah Jones led Manila with 11 points. Katie Donner and Kristen Painter scored five points each while Jordan Robertson added two.

Campbell led 12-10 after the first quarter and 24-14 at the half before taking a 36-16 lead into the final period.

Whitney Wharton and Chelsea Bledsoe scored 12 points each to pace Campbell.

Manila will play a pair of conference games on the road next week starting with Brookland on Monday night and Marmaduke on Thursday night.
