Mustangs stampede Rector

Buffalo Island Central jumped on Rector early and ran past the Cougars 69-45 Tuesday night at the Monette Athletic Complex.
The Mustangs nailed three treys in the first quarter to build a 13-5 lead before the Cougars rallied to pull to within 15-11 at the end of the first quarter on a three pointer of their own by Andrew Hill.
BIC slowly built their lead in the second period and moved ahead 21-31 when senior forward Jordan Phillips converted a conventional three point play with 6:48 left in the half. BIC grabbed their biggest lead of the first half when Phillips scored on an alley-oop pass from senior Garrett Qualls, giving the Mustangs a 31-17 lead at the 26 second mark. After a basket by Rector's Jackey Graham, who led the Cougars with 15 points, BIC's Trevor Matheny drilled a 17-footer a the buzzer, giving the Mustangs a 33-19 halftime advantage.
The Mustangs continued to build their lead in the third quarter and pushed their advantage to 46-28 when Qualls banked home a five footer, was fouled, and converted the free throw with five seconds left in the period. BIC led by as many as 25 before emptying the bench and closing out the win.
Qualls scored a game high 20 points while Phillips pumped in 18 more to lead the Mustangs. Terry Roach scored 12 points while Tab Wilde came off the bench to tally five. Nick Birdno and Trevor Matheny scored four points each while Shane Barnes and Matt Honnoll added three points apiece.
The Mustangs took the junior high game 48-35 behind Cody Smith's 18 points. BIC broke a 12-12 first period tie to take a 24-19 lead into intermission. The Mustangs led 34-29 entering the final quarter before outscoring Rector 14-6 in the final frame.
Matt Taylor also hit double digits for the Mustangs with 14 points while Brandon Atkeison and Dalton Womack scored eight points apiece.
John Smith led Rector with 13 points.
BIC traveled to Turrell Thursday night and came away with a thrilling 72-68 overtime win behind Jordan Phillips' 29 point performance.
BIC led 17-8 after the first period and built what seemed to be a safe 38-23 halftime lead. Turrell battled back in the third quarter to pull within 50-43 before tying the game at the end of regulation at 61-61. BIC outscored the Rockets 11-7 in the overtime period to claim the win.
The Mustangs got six points from Terry Roach in the overtime. Roach scored BIC's only two field goals of the extra period. The Mustangs hit 7-10 free throws in the overtime on their way to a 19-30 performance from the foul line on the night.
Garrett Qualls scored 19 points while Roach finished with 10. Trevor Matheny had eight, Shane Barnes scored five while Nick Birdno added one.
Turrell put four players in double figures, led by Bruce Delaney who score 23. Travis Postell tallied 13 while Detrick Brown and Eric Gibson added 10 points apiece.
Turrell claimed the junior high contest with a 46-41 win, despite Cody Smith's 21 points. Parris Jeans led Turrell with 15 points while Xvavra Brown and Demarcus Woods added 12 and 10 points respectively.
Matt Taylor and Brandon Atkeison added seven points each for the Mustangs while Heath Hawkins scored four and Dalton Womack added two.
BIC capped off the week with an 83-64 win over Cross County Friday night at Monette. The Mustangs, 10-7 overall and 7-1 in 2A-3 conference play, were led by Garrett Qualls, who scored a game high 30 points including a 14-14 performance from the foul line. Terry Roach poured in 25 points while Jordan Phillips added 12 to aid the Mustang's cause.
Brian Hopkins scored 27 points while Michael Jones added 12 for Cross County (1-3, 1-3).
In the junior high game, BIC defeated Cross County 66-20.
BIC will return to action Tuesday night when they host Earle in a battle for first place in the 2A-3 conference. The Mustangs will open NEA Tournament play Thursday, December 21 at 12:00 against Delaplaine.
