Buffalo Island Central capped off a busy week of basketball with a 72-65 victory over Marianna in the consolation round of the Taco Bell/KFC Classic at Hurricane Gymnasium in Jonesboro Saturday afternoon.
Garrett Qualls poured in 34 points while Jordan Phillips added 25 more to help the Mustangs, who overcame a 52-50 third quarter deficit to gain the victory. The Mustangs improved to 6-6 on the year with the win.
BIC began the tournament by dropping a 69-57 decision to Paragould. The Rams put four players in double figures, led by Casey Flippo's 20 points to post the win. Chase Causey had 18 points while Eric Johnson and Alex Garmrath scored 13 and 11 points respectively.
Terry Roach led BIC with 16 points while Jordan Phillips and Trevor Matheny added 12 points apiece. Lance Davis scored eight, Garrett Qualls netted four, Shane Barnes tallied three while Nick Birdno added two. BIC was 9-16 from the foul line and drilled six treys on the night.
The Mustangs held an 11-10 first period lead before Paragould came back to grab a 31-30 halftime advantage. BIC battled back to take a 47-45 lead into the final quarter before the Rams outscored the Mustangs 24-10 in the final frame to claim the victory.
The Mustangs battled Earle Friday night in a rematch of last year's regional championship game. The Bulldogs came out on top again with a 70-57 victory.
Garrett Qualls scored 21 points while Jordan Phillips added 15 to lead the Mustangs. Lance Davis scored eight, Nick Birdno had seven, while Trevor Matheny added six to round out the Mustang attack.
Earle led 13-10 after the first quarter and 41-23 at the half. The Bulldogs carried a 55-43 lead into the final quarter. Ricky Davis led Earle with 23 points.
BIC began the week posting a 51-49 conference victory over Crowley's Ridge Academy at Monette. Garrett Qualls sank two free throws with 6.2 seconds remaining to lift the Mustangs to victory. Jordan Phillips led BIC with 12 points while Qualls and Lance Davis added 10 points apiece.
Crowley's Ridge led 14-11 after the first quarter and 32-25 at the half. The Falcons carried a 40-34 lead into the final quarter before the Mustangs rallied for the win.
Michael Davis and Alan Williams led CRA with 13 and 10 points respectively.
BIC won the junior boys game 34-28.
In senior girls action, BIC ran past CRA 58-51.
The Lady Mustangs improved to 8-2 overall and 4-0 in league play. Jessica Shepard led all scorers with 24 points while Sammi Fowler and Kasey Garrett added 11 points each. Ashley Tate pulled down 10 rebounds for the Lady Mustangs.
CRA, who was led by Bethanie Johnson's 21 points, led 17-16 after the first quarter before BIC came back to take a 37-33 halftime lead. The Lady Mustangs held a 50-44 advantage after three quarters.
In junior girls action, BIC remained unbeaten in league play with a 34-28 win over the Lady Falcons.
