Manila splits week

Manila boys split a pair of conference games during the week while the Lady Lions participated in the Gerald Jennings Holiday Tournament where they fell in the semi-finals to eventual champion East Poinsett County.

The senior boys began the week dropping a 61-31 decision at Gosnell. Ethan Bryant poured in 16 points to lead the Pirates. Gosnell led 15-6 after the first quarter, 30-12 at the half, and 45-25 after three quarters.

Manila was led by Ross Malloy's 15 points. Devin Wright scored eight, Hunter Veach had six, while Austin Matheny added two.

In the junior high game, Manila posted a 53-48 victory behind Blake Wheeler's 25 points. Cody Webb also hit double digits with 11 points. Trey Malone scored six, Zach Birmingham had five, while Jared Burks and Garrett Scott added three points apiece.

The senior Lions bounced back Friday night as they knocked off Corning 50-48 to improve to 6-5 overall and 1-3 in 3A-3 Conference play. Ross Malloy paced the Lions with 13 points while Trey McCormick added 12. Dustin Hobeck and Hunter Veach added nine points apiece.

Manila held a 25-24 halftime advantage and took a 35-32 lead into the final quarter. Logan Hart led Corning with 14 points.

Manila's senior girls won their opener in the Gerald Jennings Tournament with a 50-33 win over the Piggott Lady Mohawks.

Katie Veach scored 16 points while Michelle Daniel added 10 to led the Lady Lion attack. Kimberly Wise and Kelce Misner scored six points apiece while Heather Dohzier added four points. Colleen Kemp, Rebekah White, Roccio Bedolla, and Chantel Hanes added two points apiece.

Erica Rickman led Piggott with 10 points while Ashley Coleman added eight.

The game was tied 11-11 after the first quarter before Manila took a 22-14 halftime lead. The Lady Lions stretched their margin to 38-18 after three quarters.

Manila ran into a buzz saw Thursday night, dropping a 71-28 decision to East Poinsett County.

Jordan Madden scored 22 points, grabbed 10 rebounds, dished out seven assists, and added seven steals while Sade Madden scored 17 points and knotched 12 rebounds to lead the Lady Warrior onslaught. Becca Ross also hit double figures with 10 points.

Colleen Kemp led Manila with seven points. Michelle Daniel had six, Katie Veach scored five, Roccio Bedolla added four, Heather Dozhier netted three, Kelce Misner tallied two, while Kimberly Wise added one before leaving the game with a knee injury.

Manila's junior and senior boys will return to action next week as they will participate in the Gerald Jennings Holiday Tournament at Armorel.
