Riverside and Buffalo Island Central both opened their conference seasons Friday night, but came away with differing results. The Rebels traveled to Turrell and dropped a 64-56 decision to the Rockets, while the Mustangs ventured to Paragould and used a fourth quarter rally to overtake Crowley's Ridge Academy 64-60.
Garrett Qualls scored 17 of his game high 22 points in the decisive fourth quarter, leading the Mustangs to their come from behind victory. CRA (1-1, 0-1 2A-3) built a 29-23 halftime lead and extended the margin to 45-31 entering the final quarter. BIC (3-2, 1-0) took advantage of several Falcon turnovers to overtake CRA. Jordan Phillips aided the Mustang cause with 20 points while Terry Roach threw in another 12 points. Steven Ramsey and Aaron Hudson scored 13 and 11 points respectively to pace the Falcons.
Travis Postell scored a game high 21 points to lead Turrell past Riverside. Bruce Delaney recorded a double-double with 16 points and 15 rebounds to aid the Rocket cause.
Cody Richardson scored 19 points for Riverside (4-3, 0-1). Glen Graham and Garrett Weaver added 18 points apiece for the Rebels.
In junior boys action, BIC ran past CRA 51-23 while Riverside improved to 8-1 with a 43-41 victory over Turrell. Senior Girls
Manila opened their conference season with an impressive 58-38 victory over Marmaduke last Monday night at Manila. Katie Veach scored 19 points and grabbed 20 rebounds to pace the Lady Lion attack. Kimberly Wise also recorded a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Michelle Daniel scored nine points while Rebekah White netted six. Kelce Misner and Colleen Kemp scored four points apiece while Roccio Bedolla added two. Lindsey Hickson paced the Greyhounds with 15 points. The Lady Lions led all the way, holding a 12-5 first quarter lead before stretching their advantage to 32-14 at the half. Manila carried a 46-30 lead into the fourth quarter and coasted to the win.
"We played really well this week," said Manila Coach Codie Malloy. "We probably played our best game of the year Monday night against Marmaduke. We shot 60 percent from the floor and out-rebounded them by 24 rebounds. We were able to beat them off the dribble and get penetration and we also played very well on defense. We held their two top players to 21 total points. They came into the game averaging almost 40 points between them. Katie Veach had a huge game and Kimberly Wise also played well. Truthfully, everybody played well as a team. I am very pleased."
Manila hosted Gosnell Thursday night and routed the Pirates 71-21. Kimberly Wise led the way with 20 points while Katie Veach posted a triple-double with 10 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists. Rebekah White scored 12 while Colleen Kemp added 10.
Riverside posted a pair of victories last week over Brookland and Turrell. The Lady Rebels started the week with a 71-42 win over the Lady Bearcats Monday night at Brookland. Riverside traveled to Turrell Friday night and opened conference play with a 63-36 thumping of the Lady Rockets.
Marisa Johnson scored 15 points and Kailey Holt added 12 in the victory over Brookland. Morgan Emery had nine points while Katey Campbell, Brianna Driver, and Holly Dudley scored seven points apiece. Anne Marie Johnson scored six points while Kelsey Turner and Kassie Douglas netted four points apiece. Riverside struggled from the foul line, hitting just 8-23, but hit seven three pointers on the night.
In the Riverside win over Turrell, Johnson led the way with 14 points as Riverside improved to 5-1 overall and 1-0 in league play. Katey Campbell scored 12 points while Kassie Douglas added 10 more. Riverside built a 17-12 halftime lead and increased their lead to 36-19 at the half. The Lady Rebels led 56-28 lead after three quarters. Jasmine Moore led Turrell (2-2, 0-1) with 20 points.
In junior high action, Manila stopped Marmaduke 26-21, but saw their undefeated season come to an end when Gosnell posted a 28-27 win Thursday night at Manila.
In the victory over Marmaduke, Savannah Jones paced the Lady Lions with 14 points. Jonna Dodd scored six, Maegan Presson netted three, Jordan Robertson added two while Katie Donner contributed one point to round out the Manila attack. Manila is now 6-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
Riverside split a pair of games, losing to Brookland 35-34 on Monday night, before dropping Turrell 35-26 on the road.
In Monday's loss to Brookland, Michelle Cobb led the Rebels with 13 points while Kyley Campbell added 11. Courtney Thomas had three while Magan Wells, Brittany Douglas, and Ashley Calvert all netted two points apiece. Kendra Staggs added one point.
