Buffalo Island Central picked up their second victory of the season while handing Abundant Life their first loss of the year with a 69-53 victory Friday night at the Monette Athletic Complex.

Abundant Life bolted to a 23-13 first quarter lead, but BIC's Trevor Matheny started the second quarter with back to back treys to ignite a 20-0 Mustang run, erasing a 10 point deficit to spark BIC to the victory.

Abundant Life did not score in the second quarter until the final seconds just before half. BIC built their lead to 50-38 after three quarters and pulled away in the fourth period to secure the non-conference win.

Garrett Qualls led the Mustangs with 24 points including three treys. Six foot six inch post player Lance Davis, who continues to recover from an injured foot, scored 12 points, including 10 in the decisive second half. Terry Roach also added 12 points for the Mustangs. Jordan Phillips scored nine points while Matheny finished the night with eight. Nick Birdno tallied three while Shane Barnes added one point.

Jon Michael Fowler, who scorched the Mustangs for 30 points in last year's match-up, led Abundant Life with 15 points on the night, while Thomas Cheney added 14 more.

"We really started getting aggressive defensively in the second quarter," BIC Head Coach Bill Taylor said. "We were much more intense defensively, and were able to force a lot of turnovers. Fowler lit us up in last year's game, so we really keyed on him defensively and did a good job of holding him down. This was a good win."

Lady Mustangs

In girls action, BIC outscored Abundant Life 80-70 behind Jessica Shepard's 42 points. The Lady Mustangs (2-1) also got 14 points and 23 rebounds from senior Ashley Tate. Hannah Paster led Abundant Life (3-1) with 22 points.

The Lady Mustangs will return to action Monday night as they host Manila in a rematch of the season opener, before traveling to Marmaduke to face the Lady Greyhounds Thursday night.

BIC's boys will return to action Friday night when they travel to Manila to face the Lions.
