The grant is given in commemoration of the Missco (Mississippi County High School) graduates of 1956 in honor of their 50th graduation anniversary, and is given, also, in memory of their classmate, the late Lloyd Morgan.
Donors are Sammye Autrey Gordon, Thomas Murel Williams, Sally Wilmoth McMechen, Jay and Rosa Morgan, Tina and Matthew McMechen.
The members of the Missco High School Class of 1956 included: Inez Birmingham (Lunsford), Jimmy Stacks, Billy Adams, Ann Clark Simmons, Joan Jones (Norton), Doris Faye Stegall, Mary Ann Bell, Murel Williams, Bettye Howell (Kilburn), Shirley Rainey, Norman Kemp, Sally Wilmoth (McMechen), Sammye Autrey (Gordon), and Lloyd Morgan (deceased).
The class sponsor was Maxine Latting, and the superintendent was A.A. Norton.
Mr. and Miss MHS 1956, Sally Wilmoth (McMechen) and Thomas Murel Williams, made the presentation to Manila Superintendent Pam Castor on Monday. McMechen was co-valedictorian and treasurer and Williams was president of the class of 1956.
McMechen was an educator for 30 years teaching in the Missco School District moving to the Manila District after the consolidation of the two schools. She retired from Manila in 1998.
