The Buffalo Island Central Mustangs made it two in a row by repeating as state Class AA basketball champions with a thrilling 68-65 overtime win over Altheimer on Saturday at Alltel Arena in North Little Rock. The Mustangs completed an amazing 36-5 record on their way to a title that some thought improbable at the start of the season. Tournament MVP Brooks Taylor scored 35 points and reserve Jordan Phillips dropped in 19 to lead the Bill Taylor-coached Mustangs to the championship. Altheimer had won the previous two state titles before giving way to BIC in 2005 and 2006. BIC now has won four state basketball titles to go along with one captured pre-consolidation by Leachville. A story about the title game and additional photos may be found inside this week's issue. (Town Crier photo/Clifton Garmrath)
