Buffalo Island Central used a stifling and suffocating full court press as the Lady Mustangs mauled Turrell 52-27 in first round action of the Region 4 Tournament Wednesday afternoon at Earle.
Turrell scored the first two points before BIC came back to run off the game's next 14 points to close the first quarter with a 14-2 advantage. The Lady Mustangs continued to pound Turrell in the second quarter, outscoring the Rockets 30-5 to take an overwhelming 44-7 lead into the dressing room at intermission.
The Mustang press made it almost impossible for the Lady Rockets to get the ball past mid-court, causing numerous turnovers. BIC called off the press to start the second half but still cruised into the second round of the Regionals where they were to face 3AA North foe Marmaduke on Friday.
The Lady Mustangs placed three players in double figures, led by Jessica Shepard's 18 points. Nan Lee Bridges scored 12 points and dished out nine assists, while Kasey Garrett also scored 12 points. Lauryn Smith and Ashley Tate pitched in four points apiece while Haley Smith added two. Tate also led the Lady Mustangs with nine rebounds.
Jasimaine Lowry hit four three pointers to lead the Lady Rockets with 13 points.
