Barber's Free Throw Extends Rebel's Woes

Wednesday, February 1, 2006

Nathan Barber's free throw with 2.3 seconds left extended Riverside's misery as the Tigers clipped the Rebels 54-53 in 3AA North Conference action Friday night at Maynard. It was the Rebel's sixth straight loss and seventh defeat in their last nine games.

M.J. Emery bounced home a three pointer with 7.1 seconds left to tie the score 53-53. Barber took the inbounds pass and raced toward the Rebel bucket but was inadvertently fouled by Tyler Timms before he could get a shot off. Barber sank the first shot to give the Tigers the lead, but unfortunately for the Rebels, missed the second, and by the time Riverside retrieved the rebound, the clock expired before Timms could get a desperation shot off.

Riverside jumped to an early 8-0 lead and had several chances to extend the margin, but failed to convert, which allowed the Tigers back into the game. The Rebels took a 14-9 lead after the first quarter and held a slim 24-22 advantage at the half. Maynard outscored Riverside 19-14 in the third period to take a 41-38 lead into the final frame.

Mark Blackwell paced three Tigers in double figures with 18 points. Barber finished the night with 15 points, including four big three pointers, plus the winning free throw. Trent Melton added 10 points and Jake Redwine tallied eight. Maynard finished the night 9-14 from the foul line and hit five three pointers. Maynard shot 20-42 from the field.

Riverside was led by Glen Graham who scored 18 points while grabbing six rebounds and blocking two shots. Jordan Adcock scored 16 points while Tyler Timms pitched in eight points, dished out five assists and had five steals. Emery had four points as did Cody Richardson while Michael Lawrence added three. Riverside finished 13-20 from the foul line and hit four treys. The Rebels shot 18-37 from the field.

In junior high action, Maynard toppled the Rebels 38-26 behind Cody Gustaff's 21 points. Maynard won the game despite hitting only 9-27 from the foul line and one three pointer.

Tyler Warhurst hit three treys to lead Riverside with nine points. Cody O'Guinn and Daniel McCormick added seven points apiece while Josh Driver tallied two and Nick Bagley added one. The Rebels were 2-6 from the free throw line and nailed four three pointers on the night.

Riverside will return to action Tuesday night when they travel to Piggott to face the Mohawks in 3AA North Conference play. The Rebels will wrap up the conference season with a Friday night game at Marmaduke.
