Lady Mustangs race past Rector and Maynard
Buffalo Island Central strengthened their grip on first place in the 3AA North Conference as the Lady Mustangs picked up a pair of key road wins last week.
Sophomore point guard Jessica Shepard put together back to back 31 point performances to lead the Lady Mustangs past Rector and Maynard.
The Lady Mustangs traveled to Rector Monday night and came away with a 68-59 win behind Shepard and senior guard Nan Lee Bridges, who poured in 23 points of her own. Ashley Tate controlled the boards for BIC as she pulled down 15 rebounds.
BIC held a slim 17-13 first quarter lead before stretching their advantage to 38-28 at the half. The Lady Cougars battled back and cut the margin to two, late in the third quarter, before BIC pulled out to a 52-46 lead entering the final frame.
The Lady Mustangs outscored Rector 16-13 in the final quarter to come away with the victory.
Tate added nine points to go along with her strong effort on the boards. Stephanie Baldridge tallied three while Lauryn Smith tacked on two.
Lauren Faulkner paced Rector (8-11, 2-8) with 24 points and six boards while Tara Shepard added 15 more. The Lady Cougars finished 19-24 from the foul stripe and nailed eight three pointers on the night.
BIC shot 13-19 from the foul line and banged home five treys.
Shepard's hot shooting continued Thursday night when she again pumped in 31 points. Bridges poured in 20 more, as the Lady Mustangs stampeded Maynard 78-55.
BIC (23-6, 10-1) shot a whopping 41 free throws, connecting on 32, in the win over the Lady Tigers. Kasey Garrett and Ashley Tate also finished in double digits with 11 and 10 points respectively. The Lady Mustangs shot four three pointers on the night.
Ashley Kerley scored 19 points while Megan Flanagan added 13 more to lead Maynard. The Tigers were 12-17 from the free throw line and hit one three pointer.
BIC held a 21-14 advantage after the first quarter and led 38-29 at the half. The Lady Mustangs built their lead to double figures and entered the final quarter with a 61-45 lead.
In junior high action, the Lady Mustangs dropped two games, losing to Rector 37-28 and Maynard 45-13.
Jordan Miller pumped in 17 points to lead all scorers in the loss to Rector. Shelby Qualls pitched in five, Ashley Jines netted four while Corie Flannigan added two. BIC was 8-16 from the free throw line on the night.
Rector held an 8-4 first period advantage and maintained their four point lead at the half, 17-13. The Lady Cougars went into the final quarter with a 26-19 lead.
Maynard clawed their way to a 45-13 win over the Lady Mustangs. Jordan Miller scored six points while Taylor Owens added three to lead BIC. Brittani Wilson, Nicole Poe, and Jenny Walker added one point apiece.
Maynard's Cheyanne Hollowell led all scorers with 12 points.
Maynard jumped to a 19-6 first quarter lead and held a commanding 28-7 advantage at the half. The Lady Tigers went into the fourth quarter with a 40-10 lead.
The Lady Mustangs return to the hardwood Monday night when they travel to Bay to face the Lady Yellowjackets. BIC will then journey to Caraway on Thursday night as they square off against arch-rival Riverside.
