Nan Lee Bridges' three pointer at the buzzer capped off a furious second half rally as the Buffalo Island Central Lady Mustangs overcame an 18 point deficit to pull out a thrilling 47-46 victory over Maynard in 3AA North Conference action Monday night at the Monette Athletic Complex.
Jessica Shepard, who injured her hamstring in the first quarter, hit one out of two free throws to tie the game 44-44 with 19 seconds left. Megan Flanagan, who led Maynard with 14 points, hit a tough shot from the paint to put the Lady Tigers up 46-44 with nine seconds to go, setting up Bridges' heroics.
BIC worked the ball for the last shot and Ashley Tate found Bridges on the right wing and the senior nailed the game winning shot as the buzzer sounded.
Maynard jumped on BIC early and grabbed a 12-6 lead after the first quarter. The Lady Tigers built their lead to 15, carrying a 28-13 advantage into the dressing room at the half. Maynard stretched their lead to 18 before the Lady Mustangs chipped away to cut the margin to 39-29 entering the final frame.
BIC outscored Maynard 18-7 in the fourth quarter as the Lady Mustangs improved to 19-6 overall and 6-1 in league play.
Bridges finished with a game high 23 points while Shepard pitched in 10 more, including three treys. Kasey Garrett scored seven points, Stephanie Baldridge had six, while Ashley Tate added one. BIC shot 9-19 from the foul line and drilled six treys on the evening.
Jessica Barber scored nine points and Ashley Kerley added eight to support Flanagan's team high 14 points. The Lady Tigers hurt themselves from the free throw line as they shot a miserable 9-27. Maynard made one three pointer on the night.
"We just played awful until the third quarter," said BIC Coach Mike Kinard. "But Maynard had a lot to do with that. Our pressure really got to them (Maynard) in the third quarter. We made a great comeback being down 18 with about five minutes left in the third quarter. We got some big plays in the end and Ashley Tate was able to get the ball to Nan Lee and she hit a big shot. We didn't play well but the kids just never gave up. They kept fighting and I was proud of them for that," concluded Kinard.
BIC completed the week with a 42-33 conference win Thursday night at Rector. Nan Lee Bridges again led the Lady Mustangs with 22 points while Jessica Shepard nailed three treys on her way to 14 more. Kasey Garrett added four points while Ashley Tate chipped in two to go along with 10 rebounds. The Lady Mustangs finished 7-12 from the foul line.
Rector was paced by Lauren Faulkner who scored 10 points. Jordan Cornelison had nine, Skye Shepard added eight points while Hannah Parsley chipped in six. Rector finished a dismal 1-12 from the free throw stripe.
In junior high action, BIC came away with a 31-24 victory over Rector as Corie Flannigan pumped in a game high 14 points. Shelby Qualls and Harley Damron had six points apiece while Jordan Miller added five.
Rector was paced by Hillary Calhoun who scored 10 points while Sarah Hester added eight.
BIC led 5-4 after the first quarter and 14-8 at the half. The Lady Mustangs carried a 17-16 lead into the final quarter before pulling away for the victory.
The Lady Mustangs dropped a 43-12 decision to Maynard on Monday night. Jordan Miller and Taylor Owens scored four points each to lead BIC. Corie Flannigan had three points while Harley Damron added one.
BIC will return to action Monday night as they travel to Walnut Ridge to take on the Lady Bobcats in 3AA North Conference action. The Lady Mustangs will play host to Riverside on Thursday night.
