Trumann used an 8-0 run to end the first quarter and break open a close game as the Lady Wildcats eliminated Manila 64-49 from the Northeast Arkansas Invitational Tournament Friday afternoon at the Convocation Center in Jonesboro.
Trumann held a slim 10-9 lead with 1:35 left in the opening period but pulled away to an 18-9 advantage by reeling off the quarter(s last eight points.
The Lady Wildcats held the lead by forcing numerous Manila turnovers only to see the Lady Lions stay in the game by making 11-13 first half free throws. Trumann's Shandi Clayton nailed an 18-foot jumper at the buzzer to give the Lady Wildcats a 29-22 lead at the half.
Trumann extended their lead to 43-33 by the end of the third quarter after building up as much as a 13 point lead on the Lady Lions. Trumann put the game away in the fourth quarter, outscoring Manila 21-16 to take home the win and advance to the tournament's quarter-finals in the Class 3A-4A-5A bracket.
The eighth seeded Lady Wildcats were led by senior forward Jess Byrd who scored a team high 17 points. Clayton contributed 12 points for Trumann while Alex Guthrie netted 11. Trumann finished 9-12 from the foul line and saw three players foul out.
Manila was led by Rachel Cheadle's game high 18 points, nine of which came in the fourth quarter. Michelle Daniel tacked on 16 more for the Lady Lions. Katie Veach scored six, Heather Dozhier tallied five while Kari Ramirez and Myra Earnest netted two points apiece. Manila shot an impressive 23-31 from the free throw line.
Manila will return to regular season action Monday, Jan. 2, when they travel to Trumann for a rematch with the Lady Wildcats.
