The Buffalo Island Central Junior High Mustangs got a boost when Tab Wildy returned to action as he paid quick dividends, scoring 21 points to lead the Mustangs to a 50-47 victory over Nettleton in the first round of the 10th annual Nettleton Christmas Shootout at Raider Gymnasium.
Wildy, who had been sidelined by a medical condition, pumped in three treys as the Mustangs built an early lead and held on for the win. Cody Smith also hit double figures for BIC with 13 points. Brandon Atkeison and Heath Hawkins netted six points each while Steven Greathouse finished the BIC scoring with four points.
Nettleton was led by Seth Freeman who scored 13 points while Aaron Moore added 10 more.
The Mustangs led 19-10 after the first quarter and 36-19 at the half. Nettleton cut the Mustang lead to 39-32 entering the final frame, but the Mustangs held on for the victory.
In the second round, the Mustangs dropped a 48-42 decision to Gosnell. The Pirates placed four players in double figures led by Jevon Smith who pumped in 15 points. Josh Johnson and Deontra Scott had 11 points each while Ethan Bryant pitched in 10.
Cody Smith paced the Mustangs with 19 points while Steven Greathouse scored eight and Tab Wildy added seven. Heath Hawkins scored six points and Brandon Atkeison tallied two to round out the Mustang scoring.
Gosnell held a slim 12-10 lead after the first quarter and kept their two point advantage, 23-21, at the half. The Pirates increased their lead to 37-30 entering the final quarter.
In the third place game, Paragould outlasted BIC 48-41 as Tyler Arnold scored 15 points while Anthony Van Horn and Justin Roberts added 12 each to lead the Rams to victory. Paragould used a 22-29 performance from the free throw line to secure the win.
The Rams led 10-3 after the first quarter and 22-18 at the half. Paragould took a 34-27 lead into the final quarter.
Cody Smith led BIC with 11 points while Heath Hawkins also hit double figures with 10. Zach Corter nailed three treys and finished with nine points. Steven Greathouse netted six, Tab Wildy tallied three while Brandon Atkeison scored two for the Mustangs, who hit seven three pointers on the day.
