Monette High School reunion set for Nov. 26

Wednesday, November 16, 2005

The Monette High School Alumni Association has finalised plans for their upcoming reunion and for the afternoon musical program, slated for Nov. 26.

Registration begins at 10:00 a.m. at Buffalo Island Central West Elementary. Lunch will be provided by food vendors on the campus, assisted by the BIC Senior High FBLA.

"All of the known classmates from Monette High School have been contacted and invited to attend the reunion," Ed Ball, Alumni President, said. "We have been holding our reunions every five years, since 1990, and each year we think this one is bigger and better. We have a lot of volunteers working on the details of the days events and the afternoon program. All I have to do is try to stay out of their way."

Ball's class of 1955 is celebrating their 50 year anniversary with special recognition at the afternoon musical program and a party afterwards at the Holiday Inn in Jonesboro.

"We plan to especially recognise our class sponsor, Edna Mae Freeman, and room mother, Lena Johnston," Ball said. "We are fortunate to have them with us, and they both plan to come to the reunion. They sure put up with a lot from all of us students and have countless stories to tell."

Pat Steele Taylor and Stacey Smithee Qualls will co-host the musical program, which will provide the grand finale for the day's events. The program will consist of musicians, vocalists, quartets, bands, veterans, flag bearers, swing dancers and former cheerleaders.

"It never ceases to amaze me at how much talent came out of our school," Taylor said. "The MHS classmates are coming from all across the United States to provide entertainment for the program, which will begin at 4 p.m. in the BIC gymnasium."

Qualls spent 11 years at Monette School and graduated with the first BIC Class of 1985 after Monette and Leachville schools consolidated in the spring of 1984.

"We have included a wide variety of talents for the afternoon program and I have no doubt that people will enjoy the entertainment and talk about it for years to come," Qualls said.

MHS Alumni Gale Yates will serve as Master of Ceremonies for the 2005 Musical Program.

"Pat and Stacey have made my job easy," Yates said. "They have lined up so much talent that I can hardly wait to see and hear it all myself. I always enjoy the musical program, at the end of the day's events, and will find myself being more of a spectator than a master of ceremonies."

The 2005 Monette High School Reunion Yearbook will be on sale during the day, along with previously printed reunion books, "Monette High School Remembered," 1995, and "Monette Arkansas Centennial, The ties that bind," 2000. The yearbook lists updated student and faculty names and addresses. A special MHS Reunion DVD will be produced, and can be ordered in advance. The DVD will include candid shots throughout the day and coverage of the musical program.
