Manila notches first win of season

The Manila Lady Lions dropped two out of three games last week in senior girls high school basketball action.

Manila began the week hosting the Marmaduke Lady Greyhounds. Manila placed three players in double figures, but couldn't overcome a 20 point Greyhound third period in falling to Marmaduke 68-60.

Michelle Daniel scored 19 points to lead Manila while Rachel Cheadle and Katie Veach pitched in 14 and 11 points respectively. Heather Dozhier had nine points while Kari Ramirez added five to round out the Lady Lion attack.

Marmaduke had four players in double figures led by Brooke Smith and Lindsey Hickson who each scored 16 points. Amber Haynes had 12 points while Jade Brinkley added 11.

Manila led 20-16 after the first quarter before Marmaduke rallied to grab a 33-32 halftime lead. The Greyhounds blew the game open in the third quarter, outscoring Manila 20-9 to take a 53-41 lead into the final period.

The Lady Lions traveled to Bay Tuesday night and came away with a 77-63 victory over the Lady Yellowjackets. Rachel Cheadle poured in 26 points while Katie Veach and Michelle Daniel added 22 points apiece to pace a potent Lady Lion attack. Roccio Bedolla had four points, Kari Ramirez scored two points while Myra Earnest added one to round out the Manila scoring.

Bay was led by Stephanie Smith who scored 15 points and Jerra Ferguson who added 14 points.

Manila led 21-19 after the first quarter before watching Bay grab a 39-35 halftime lead. The two teams battled even in the third quarter with Bay hanging onto a four point lead, 50-46, entering the final period. Manila exploded for 31 points in the final frame, including 19 by Daniel, to put the game away.

Manila dropped a 74-63 heartbreaker in overtime Thursday night at Valley View.

Michelle Daniel scored 25 points while Rachel Cheadle added 20 to lead the Lady Lions. Katie Veach scored six, Roccio Bedolla had five, Heather Dozhier added three while Kari Ramirez and Amy Browning pitched in two points apiece.

Valley View was led by Whitney Philamlee who scored 17 points while Skyla Talley and Jordan Huggins added 14 points each.

Manila led 15-14 after the first quarter and 25-22 at the half. The Lady Blazers took a 43-39 lead into the final frame before the Lady Lions knotted the score at 60-60 at the end of regulation. Valley View outscored the Lady Lions 14-3 in the overtime period to take the victory.

The Lady Lions are now 1-6 on the year.

Manila won the junior high game 44-43 as Kimberly Wise scored 15 points and Colleen Kemp added 11 points to lead the Lady Lions. Kelce Misner and Rebekah White had five points each, Kristen Painter scored three points, Megan Presson and Jonna Dodd netted two points apiece, while Katie Donner pitched in one.

Manila will return to action Thursday when they host Westside.
