Brandon Ballard fired a one hit shutout, and Jordan Phillips went 3-3 at the plate, including a solo home run, as Buffalo Island Central advanced to the second round of the AA-State Baseball Tournament with a 5-0 victory over Foreman Saturday afternoon at Norphelt.
Ballard struck out 12 while going the distance to pick up the victory and also laced a run scoring triple to help his own cause.
The Mustangs struck scoring two runs in the second inning when Hunter Smith drilled a two-run double. Ballard's two out triple in the fifth made the score 3-0, before Phillips slammed his home run in the bottom of the sixth to make it 4-0. Third baseman Brooks Taylor added a RBI single in the sixth, to give Ballard and the Mustangs all the runs they'd need.
Ballard was dominant throughout the game as Foreman threatened only once. Foreman had runners at first and third with one out and had the four and five hitters coming up, but Ballard struck both hitters out to snuff out the threat. Ballard improves to (8-1) on the season with the win.
The Mustangs (23-6) will played Greenland (21-1) at 2:30 Monday afternoon in the second round taking a 4-3 victory.
BIC are scheduled to play at 4 p.m. today (Tuesday).
