Jessica Willyerd supplied the hitting while Ashley Tate provided the pitching as the Buffalo Island Central Lady Mustangs improved to 1-3 on the year with an 8-2 victory over Maynard in 3AA North Conference softball action Thursday afternoon at Monette.
Tate threw a three hitter while Willyerd went a perfect 4-4 at the plate while driving in two runs in addition to scoring four more as the Mustangs picked up their first win of the season.
BIC jumped on the Lady Tigers in the first inning, scoring four runs on four straight hits by Amber Overfield, Nan Lee Bridges, Marina Garcia, and Willyerd.
BIC added two more runs in the second by a pair of RBI hits by Rachel Dunigan and Lauren Smith.
Overfield, Bridges, and Garcia all went 2-4 while Katie Olive went 2-3 at the plate. Two of Willyerd's four hits were doubles while Dunigan and Smith both drove in two runs apiece.
"I am very proud of them," said BIC Softball Coach Mark Hurst. "Ashley Tate pitched a great game. She didn't walk many (five) and she struck out seven. We have been able to have 14 straight days of practice since we were off last week, which has really helped us since we are such a young team. The practice time has helped us both offensively and defensively. I thought we really hit the ball well today."
The Lady Mustangs will resume action Monday as they travel to Walnut Ridge to face the Lady Bobcats before returning home for a Tuesday afternoon game against Bay. BIC will then play at Marmaduke to close out the week on Friday afternoon.
