BIC School Board accepts bids

Wednesday, February 23, 2005

The Buffalo Island Central school board met at Ron's Catfish Restaurant, in Paragould, at 6 p.m. Feb. 15 and accepted bids on a new bus, and construction of trophy cases in the senior high gymnasium.

Bids on a 2006, 71-passenger bus were received from Ward Bus Sales, for $61,859, and Merles Bus Sales, for $63,505. The board accepted the bid from Ward for a July 1 delivery date.

Five bids were reviewed for construction of trophy cases in the new BIC senior high gymnasium in Monette. These included Hearn Woodworks of Blytheville for $12,100; Roger Davis Construction Co. of Leachville for $24,600, Gipson Construction Co. of Manila for $19,407; Ransons of Jonesboro for $25,806; and Jerry Reed of Monette for $10,277. The board voted to accept Reed's bid to construct the cases.

David Short was hired as the new BIC technology co-ordinator for the 2005-2006 school year.

Contracts were renewed for all four building principals for the 2005-2006 school year.

Changes were adopted for junior and senior high school cheerleading tryouts, which included: cheerleaders having met the requirements by tryout procedure for five consecutive years at BIC would automatically be given cheerleader status for the senior year (this would not include students moving into the district that have been cheerleaders in other districts); tryouts (if possible) should be scheduled for the Friday following State Basketball Tournament play (not state finals); anytime there are more than 16 students trying out, everyone tries out; all training for tryouts and all judging will be outside personnel; and students other than those trying out will not assist with training.

The board accepted Kima Stewart's resignation from the position of junior high cheerleading sponsor.

Bids for a canopy to be constructed for the west entrance to the East Elementary were reviewed. Superintendent George Edd Holland was instructed to seek more bids before a decision is made.

The board expressed congratulations to student groups for their recent achievements, which included junior high Quiz Bowl Team, for their regional championship, junior high cheerleading squad, for their regional championship, and senior high cheerleading squad for regional, state AA, and overall state AA championships.

The next regularly scheduled board meeting is 7 p.m. March 14 in the BIC superintendent's office.
