Jordan Griggs scorched the nets for 25 points and Trevor Matheny added 14 more as Buffalo Island Central held off Rector 49-40 in the first round of the 3AA North Junior High District Tournament Monday night at Caraway.
The Junior Ponies jumped to a 20-7 first quarter lead only to see the Cougars battle back to pull within five points, 25-20, at the half. BIC increased their lead to 36-29 after three quarters and hit 8-9 free throws in the final period to seal the victory and advance to the semi-finals against top-seeded Riverside.
The fourth seeded Mustangs improved their record to 17-11 with the victory. Rounding out the scoring for BIC was Nathan Perrin with four points while Shane Barnes scored three and Cody Smith netted two. The Mustangs were 13-18 from the foul line and hit five treys on the night.
Rector was led by Derek Wyss who scored 19 points while Jackie Graham pitched in 15 more as Rector saw their season end, finishing the year at 9-17. Rector was 10-13 from the foul line and hit two three pointers on the night.
