Eighth seeded Buffalo Island Central had the unenviable task of facing top seeded Riverside in the opening round of the 3AA North Junior District Tournament on the Rebels' home floor at Caraway Tuesday night. After holding their own in the first quarter, trailing the Lady Rebels only 10-6, BIC saw the Rebels stretch their lead to 25-14 by the half.
The Lady Rebels used their superior depth to wear down the Lady Mustangs, outscoring BIC 12-6 in the third period and 13-4 in the fourth period en route to a 50-24 victory as the Lady Mustangs saw their season come to an end.
The Lady Mustangs were led by Lauren Smith who scored 12 points, six coming from the free throw line. Breanna Cole had six while Corie Flannigan and Jordan Miller added four and two points respectively for BIC. The Lady Mustangs managed to get to the free throw line 27 times, but could connect on only 14 and failed to hit a three pointer.
Riverside was led by Kassie Douglas who had a game high 16 points. Kelsey Turner and Brianna Driver added nine points each. Kasey Davis netted eight, Katey Campbell scored four, while Jamie Lawrence and Megan Short contribued two points apiece to round out the Lady Rebel attack. Riverside was 5-13 from the charity stripe and hit one three pointer on the night.
With the win, Riverside advanced to the semi-finals to face fourth seeded Marmaduke.
Buffalo Island Central placed one player on the All-Conference team, freshman Lauryn Smith.
