Buffalo Island Central started Monday night tied for first place in the 3AA North Conference with the defending two time champion Bay Lady Yellowjackets. The Lady Mustangs came away with a hard fought 50-44 victory over a pesky Marmaduke team and then waited for the news of the outcome of the Bay-Piggott contest. When the news came, it was good for the Lady Mustangs, as Piggott knocked off Bay 68-52, handing BIC the 3AA North Senior Girls Conference Championship.
Playing on their home floor, the Lady Mustangs jumped to a 14-4 lead after the first quarter, only to see the Lady Greyhounds battle back to within seven, 32-25, at the half. But freshman Jessica Shepard, who led the Mustangs with 19 points, and Nan Lee Bridges, who had 15, held off Marmaduke in the final half to secure the victory and the conference title.
Jade Brinkley scored a game high 20 points for Marmaduke while Brooke Smith pitched in 13 more.
With the win, BIC improved to 21-5 overall and 12-2 in conference play, a game ahead of second place finishers Bay and Piggott, who both completed 11-3 conference marks.
In junior high action, Marmaduke rolled over the Lady Mustangs 37-22.
The Senior Lady Mustangs will close out the regular season with two non-conference games this week as they play host to Harrisburg on Monday night and Armorel on Thursday night.
The Junior Lady Mustangs will face Riverside on Tuesday night in the first round of the District Tournament at Caraway. The game is slated for an 8:15 tip-off.
