Matthew David "Matt" Ellis - Jonesboro

Matthew David "Matt" Ellis, 25, of Jonesboro, died Saturday in Jonesboro. Born in Blytheville, he had lived in Manila before moving to Jonesboro in 1980. He was a 1996 graduate of Jonesboro High School where he was an All-Conference baseball player. He was also a member of the Hurricane football and basketball teams. He attended the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity. He was a graduate of Arkansas State University in Jonesboro. He was employed by National Home Center in Fayetteville and was a member of the Walnut Street Baptist Church in Jonesboro.

Survivors include his parents, Jim and Jan Ellis of Jonesboro; two brothers, Jimmy Ellis and his wife, Kathy, of Frisco, Texas, and Todd Ellis of Jonesboro; his grandmothers, Mary Elizabeth Ellis of Manila and Loraine Philhours of Jonesboro; a niece, Katelyn Ellis of Frisco, Texas; a host of aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, John William Ellis, and his maternal grandfather, David Owen Philhours.

The funeral was held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Walnut Street Baptist Church in Jonesboro with Glen Putman and Curtis Shatley officiating. Burial will follow with Emerson Funeral Home of Jonesboro in charge of arrangements.
