Earlier in the year, the Buffalo Island Central Mustangs barely escaped defeat on the road at Bay as the Yellowjackets played one of their best games of the season. The Mustangs were not about to let the Jackets get close this time around, as the high scoring duo of Brooks Taylor and Brandon Ballard combined for 58 points, 29 apiece, in a 77-51 thumping of Bay at Monette.
It looked as though the game would be another close one as the MuMustangs held only a four point lead after the first quarter, 16-12. But BIC went into the dressing room leading 35-28 and then stretched their lead to 51-38 after three quarters of play. Bay decided to switch defenses entering the fourth quarter to try to slow down Taylor and Ballard, but the Mustangs went to their bench, bringing in three point specialist Hunter Smith, who nailed three straight treys, as the Ponies opened up a 20 point lead to blow the game open.
Bay found itself behind the eight ball in the first two minutes of play as their second leading scorer, senior Justin Hutchison, picked up two quick fouls and had to go to the bench for the remainder of the half. Hutchison picked up another foul early in the third quarter and was never able to get untracked as he finished with only eight points. Derek McMasters was the only Bay player in double figures as he scored 24 points to lead the Jackets.
Rounding out the BIC scoring attack was Derek Rolland with four points, while Lance Davis and Nick Birdno scored two points each and Cord Rose and Terry Roach added one point apiece. The Mustangs were 16-19 from the foul line and nailed nine treys on the night. Bay shot 9-14 from the charity stripe but managed only two treys on the evening.
With the victory, BIC improved to 28-3 on season and a perfect 10-0 in league play. The Mustangs have now won 41 straight home games entering next Tuesday night's game against Riverside, the league's second place team.
In the junior high game, BIC blasted Bay 51-29 as Trevor Metheny scored 15 points while Jordan Griggs added 14 more. Shane Barnes and Steven Greathouse netted six points apiece. Tab Wildy and Nathan Perrin added four points each while Cody Smith contributed two points. BIC finished 10-16 from the foul line and hit five treys on the night.
Jesse Harris led Bay with 12 points. The Junior Jackets managed to shoot only four three throws, connecting on two while nailing one trey.
BIC led 14-5 after the first period and 24-14 at the half before opening up a 17 point lead after three periods, 40-23.
