Fire grants awarded

Thursday, November 11, 2004

Monette Fire Department was among the recipients of fire grants awarded to departments throughout Arkansas.

According to Robert Summerville, Rural Fire Protection Administrator at Greenbrier, the Arkansas Forestry Commission has awarded 196 $1,000 grants, and one $840 grant to individual fire departments in Arkansas for the purchase of fire-fighting equipment.

A fire department must apply during the month of June each year and the applications are judged based upon need and merit of their project. The only requirement is that they are serving communities of populations of 10,000 or less. The 196 departments have already submitted receipts for the purchases requested of $2,000 and they will be awarded $1,000 this month.

This grant has been awarded every year since 1974 and is Federal money form the U.S. forest Service, administered by the Arkansas Forestry Commission

The grant is not always the same amount depending upon how much is available and requested.

"Hopefully it will be available again next year," Summerville said.

The Arkansas Forestry Commission received 269 requests totaling $614,938.91 for this year's grant. Only $196,840 was awarded. The checks have been distributed to all the nine (9) AFC districts on Sept. 30.
