On Sept. 18 competitive fast pitch softball teams based out of Jonesboro and Paragould competed in a 14 and under NEA Moving Up Tournament in Trumann.
Fat City, a true 12 and under team, played up for the weekend finished as runners-up against the older competition. Michele Cobb, second baseman from Lake City; Jonna Dodd, catcher from Manila; Katie Donner, centerfielder from Manila; Karla Marroquin, pitcher and third baseman from Monette; and Cecilia Moye, shortstop from Trumann, all contributed to the team's success. Pitcher Karla Marroquin picked up two victories on the day.
Their former teammates Shelby Wise, pitcher and Abby Wise, right fielder, both of Manila played for the 14 and Under Batters' Box who won the tournament defeating Fat City 4-0 in the final game. In the 11 innings Shelby Wise pitched, she faced only 36 batters, struck out 22 and walked 1 giving up 1 hit and no runs on the day.
All of the aforementioned girls are formerly of the 12 and under FOCUS Fast Pitch, but due to age differences the girls will be playing in different divisions in the spring of 2005. Fat City will compete in the 14 and under Jonesboro league and 12 and under competitive tournaments while batters' box will compete in the Jonesboro high school league and 14 and under competitive tournaments. Both teams look to see a great deal of success.
