Riverside opens tennis season shutting out Weiner

Wednesday, September 22, 2004

Riverside opened the 2004 tennis season by shutting out the Weiner Cardinals in girl's action 2-0, only to watch the Cardinals battle from behind to forge a 4-4 draw in boy's action Thursday afternoon at Weiner.T

The Lady Rebels won the singles match as Miranda Boyd, the only returning letterman from last year's team, posted a 6-1 win over Weiner's Teryn Wixson. Boyd jumped out early and had little trouble disposing of her opponent in winning her first match of the young season. In doubles' action, the Rebel tandem of Ashley Foster and Jessica Tucker outlasted Weiner's Lacey Gephart and Ashley Davis, 6-3.

In boy's singles action, the Rebels and Weiner split as the Cardinal's number one player Kyle Lawrence staved off a late rally by Rebel number one player Tyler Timms to win 7-5. Lawrence jumped out to a 4-1 lead before Timms rallied to tie the match at 5-5. Lawrence regrouped to win the last two points and the match. Sophomore Blake Barnes won the number two singles match with a 6-3 win over Weiner's Bo Hicks.

In boy's doubles action, the Rebels won three of the first four matches as the team of Bryan and Blake McCormick shut out Weiner's duo of Daniel Chatman and Wesley Dunham, 6-0. Weiner came back in the second match as the team of Aaron Riley and Jordan Beard edged the Rebels' M.J. Emery and Cody Weathers 6-4. Riverside then claimed the next two matches in relatively easy fashion as the team of Cody Richardson and Zach Ridge defeated the Weiner duo of Alex Brooks and Ross Phillips, 6-2. The Rebel tandem of Shawn Mathews and Emery then blitzed Weiner's Keith Morgan and Dunham 6-1.

Weiner was then faced with the task of defeating the Rebels in the final two doubles matches to gain a split, which they did when Lawrence and Hicks knocked off Timms and Zac Reynolds 6-4, while the Cardinals Riley and Beard rallied to defeat McCormick and McCormick 6-4.

The Rebels are now 1-0 in girl's play, and 0-0-1 in boy's action, while Weiner drops to 0-2 in girl's play and 1-0-1 in boy's action.

Riverside returns to action Tuesday afternoon at Trumann and then travel to Nettleton to play the Raiders Thursday afternoon. Both matches will start at 4:00 p.m.
